#1 Herons edged 4-3 in OT at #23 Brandeis

WALTHAM, MASS.—The No. 1 William Smith College soccer team scored with 3.7 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3 and send their NCAA quarterfinal match into overtime, but it was No. 23 Brandeis that scored 1:43 into the extra period to secure the win.

The Herons led 2-0 in the 74th minute, but the Judges (16-4-3) scored three goals in a span of 7:46 to take a 3-2 lead with 8:04 left in regulation. Junior Lauren Kogelmann was able to body the ball over the goal line after a pass from senior Brie Ruane to tie the game up at 3-3 in the final minute. However, Brandeis' Jessica Morana scored the game-winner for the Judges, sending them to the national semifinals for the first time in their program's history.

William Smith finished its season with a 21-1-0 record. The Herons set program records in points (239), goals (84) and assists (71) this season. The Herons eight seniors – Ella McMackin, Shay Callahan, Kara Shue, Bridget Westerman, Emma Diehl, MacKenzie Smith, Brie Ruane and Lauren Randaccio have recorded the most wins and highest win percentage for a William Smith soccer graduating class with a 79-6-3 four-year record.

Just minutes into the match, McMackin blasted a shot on goal that was punched up over the crossbar by the Brandeis keeper. In the 22nd minute, sophomore Megan Richard fired a shot inside the far post after an assist from Ruane on the right side to give the Herons a 1-0 advantage.

In the 74th minute, sophomore Sarah Olick-Sutphen sent a cross to find senior Kara Shue whose shot banged off the post and into the back of the net. It was her 13th goal this season. Shue finishes her Heron soccer career with the William Smith career assists record (49) and the assists in a season mark (15).

Just 32 seconds after the Herons' second goal, Brandeis started its scoring run. Lea McDaniel scored from the middle of the box off a cross from Samantha Schwartz. Schwartz then tied up the match at 2-2 in the 82nd minute on a strike from 18 yards out. Just 40 seconds later, Julia McDermott gave the Judges their first lead of the game. She scored off a rebound from a Jessica Morana shot.

The Herons bore down and found the back of the net in the final seconds of regulation. Ruane carried the ball in on the right side of the field and sent a pass out in front of the goal. Kogelmann was there to push the chest high ball over the line to send the match to overtime.

In the second minute of the extra period, the Herons were whistled for a foul about 10 yards outside of the box giving Brandeis a free kick. The Judges sent the ball into the box. Sophomore Veronica Romines made an initial save, but could not hang on to the ball. Jessica Morana was there to finish off the rebound and clinch the win for Brandeis.
