Hobart rally falls short at Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Hobart College first-year forward Sam Allen recorded his first career double-double, but the University of Rochester notched a 73-59 victory over the Statesmen in the Louis Alexander Palestra tonight.

Allen was 5-of-11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line. He also corralled a team-high 11 rebounds. He was joined in double figures by senior guard Pete Drescher and sophomore guard Jamal Lucas, who contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore guard Colin Dougherty added eight points and a team-high four assists.

Rochester was led by Mack Montague's 22 points and Sam Borst-Smith 21 points and 13 rebounds. Jacob Wittig added 10 points for Rochester (4-0), which is off to its best start since the 2012-13 season.

Wittig scored five points to key a 19-6 Rochester run that opened a 53-35 lead midway through the second half. Hobart used a 14-3 flurry to move within 56-49 over the next four minutes. Drescher opened the run with a layup on the break and finished it with a 3-pointer.

Montague sank one trey and Wittig added two more to stretch the lead back to 65-49 with four minutes remaining.

Rochester shot 41 percent from the floor with 12 3-pointers and sank 68 percent from the line. Hobart shot 30 percent from the floor with seven 3-pointers and made 69 percent from the free throw line.

The Statesmen (1-2) will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when they host the University of Scranton. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
