Bingaman scores OT game winner for Statesmen at Skidmore

Hobart College senior Nick Bingaman scored the game-winning goal 2:45 into overtime to clinch a 2-1 non-league win for the Statesmen hockey team over Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., tonight. Hobart improves to 7-2-1 this year, while the Thoroughbreds fall to 6-4-0.

The teams will meet again tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Saratoga Springs for another non-league contest.

The first two periods of the game proved scoreless. Each team logged 11 shots in the first, and the Statesmen held a 13-7 advantage in the second. Just 4:54 into the third, first-year Lawson MacDougal scored his first collegiate goal to give Hobart a 1-0 lead. Classmates Zach Sternbach and Julien Denicourt earned the assists.

With one second left in regulation, Anthony Bird tied the game up for Skidmore. Quincy Gregg and Corey Morgan were credited with the assists.

Bingaman notched his seventh goal of the year to secure the win. Senior Bobby Sokol set up the play. Junior Frank Oplinger played 60 minutes in goal and made 29 saves. First-year Alexander Connal came in for the overtime period, but did not need to make a save.

Hobart finished with a 36-30 edge in shots. The Statesmen went 0-for-4 on the power play and killed off all three of the Thoroughbreds' power-play attempts. Jack McDonald played 58:31 in goal for Skidmore and finished with 34 saves.
