Baum’s 17 leads Herons over Golden Eagles

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore guard Natalia Baum scored a season-high 17 points to lead the William Smith College basketball team over the College at Brockport 81-73 tonight. The Herons' third straight win moved their record to 4-2 overall. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-7.

Baum was 6-of-8 shooting with a 3-pointer and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. Sophomore guard Olivia Hughes added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers. She also had a game-high four steals. First-year guard Emma Gallagher gave William Smith a spark of the bench, scoring 13 points, including three triples. Senior guard Melanie Patterson added 11 points and a game-high five assists. Sophomore forward Mia Morrison led the home team to a 38-33 advantage on the board, grabbing 10 to go with nine points.

Brockport also had four players in double figures, led by senior guard Faith Welch's game-high 22 points. Senior forward Hannah Rehbaum posted a double-double on 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior forward Lindsay Johnson and first-year guard Olivia Lebaron chipped in 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Brockport (0-7) never trailed in the opening quarter and led by as many as six. The Golden Eagles again pushed their lead to as many as six by the midway point of the second quarter, but then Gallagher caught fire. She made all three of her 3-pointers during a 15-4 Heron run that gave the home team its first lead of the night. William Smith (4-2) led by as many as six before taking a 38-33 lead into halftime.

Baum opened the second half with a 3-pointer, launching the Herons on an 8-2 run that stretched their lead to 11. Brockport answered with 15 straight points to reclaim the lead. Lebaron scored seven points to key the surge. The Golden Eagles carried a 59-58 edge into the fourth quarter.

Welch tied the game at 68 with a jumper near the midpoint of the fourth quarter, but the Herons turned up the pressure on defense, holding the visitors scoreless over the next four and a half minutes. Senior forward Gabrielle Eure put the Herons in front for good with a pair of free throws. Hughes added two with a layup, Baum tacked on a jumper, and Patterson made 1-of-2 free throws to make it a seven-point game with 48 seconds remaining.

Johnson's layup with 35 seconds to go, ended Brockport's scoreless streak, but it was too little, too late.

Brockport will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 9, when the Golden Eagles travel to Potsdam for a 6 p.m. start. William Smith is off for two weeks for final exams. The Herons will be back in action on Dec. 19 when they take on Plattsburgh in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the first round of the Cruzin Classic.
