Game Recap: Hobart Basketball | | Ken DeBolt

Hobart rallies past Union in OT

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second consecutive Friday, the Hobart College basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to win in overtime. Tonight, first-year Colin Dougherty scored on a driving layup with 1.6 seconds remaining to give the Statesmen an 84-82 OT win over Union College.

Dougherty was one of five Hobart players in double figures on the night, finishing with 17 points. First-year Jamal Lucas led the Statesmen with 19 points to go with seven rebounds. First-year Matt Walsh scored 10 of his 15 points in overtime and collected six caroms Junior Pete Drescher recorded 13 points, six rebounds, and a team-high four assists. First-year Justas Valciukas added 11 points and a team-high nine boards.

Union got game-highs of 26 points and six assists from junior Deshon Burgess, 24 points and a game-high 13 rebounds from senior William Hython, and 11 points and six boards from junior Wade McNamara.

Last Friday, Hobart wiped out a 14-point first half deficit to top Clarkson 72-67 in overtime. It was the largest deficit the Statesmen have overcome under second-year Head Coach Tim Sweeney. Tonight, it was déjà vu all over again, only this time, Hobart found itself in a 51-37 hole with 16:36 remaining in regulation.

McNamara drilled a 3-pointer to give the Dutchmen their 14-point lead, forcing Hobart to call timeout. While Sweeney huddled with his assistants to talk strategy, Drescher gave a fiery speech to his teammates, imploring them to fight to the end in their season finale.

After the timeout, Drescher continued to inspire his teammates, making a layup, getting a steal and going to the rim for another bucket. He touched off a 14-1 Hobart run that in less than four minutes made it a 1-point game. From that point to the end of regulation, neither team led by more than 4 points. The final 9 points of regulation came at the free throw line, with Valciukas tying the game with 66 seconds to go.

Union had one look at the basket in the final minute, missing a layup, while Hobart committed a turnover on its only possession down the stretch.

In overtime, Walsh put the Statesmen on his back. He scored Hobart's first 9 and 10 of the team's 14 points in OT. With the Statesmen clinging to a 1-point lead as the clock approached one minute, Walsh hoisted a 3-pointer that put his team up 79-75. The triple was set up by an offensive rebound by Drescher.

Union misfired on its next possession and fouled Dougherty with 57 seconds to go. He made both freebies to give Hobart an 81-75 lead, the largest lead of extra time.

Burgess hit a 3-pointer and a layup in succession to trim Hobart's lead to 1. The Statesmen were able to run 14 seconds off the clock after the layup before the Dutchmen finally fouled Walsh. He made 1-of-2 to make it a 2-point game. Burgess tied the game with 16 seconds to go, setting the stage for Dougherty to drive down the right side of the lane for the winner.

Hobart improved to 10-2 this season in games when it scores at least 70 points. The Statesmen end the year 12-13 overall, 8-8 in the Liberty League.

Union is 12-11 overall, 9-6 in conference play. The Dutchmen conclude the regular season at home against RIT on Sunday, Feb. 21.
