Red Dragons skate past Herons in season finale

Cortland, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team completed its 2015-16 season today with a 4-2 loss to Cortland at Alumni Arena this afternoon. Sophomore Grace Durham posted a team-high two points to lead the Herons.

William Smith (8-15-2, 2-13-2) took an early 1-0 lead behind Durham's short-handed goal. First-year Lindsay Brown intercepted a pass at the offensive blue line and fed a pass to Durham. Durham wristed a shot past Deanna Meunier. The goal came on the Herons' first shot of the game. At 6:34 of the first period, William Smith doubled its lead when first-year Egan Sachs-Hecht deposited a rebound past Meunier for her second goal of the season. Durham and first-year Molly Eden were credited with assists on the goal. Eden's assist was her first career point. The Herons carried a 2-0 lead into the second period thanks to 21 saves from sophomore Laurel Brown.

Cortland (11-12-1. 7-10-1) scored three second period goals to lift them past William Smith. Niamh O'Connor and Sydney Carlucci scored goals for the Red Dragons in the first 1:49 of the second period. O'Connor's power-play goal was assisted by Laura Drew and Kaitlyn Ryan. At 6:48 of the second period, Corey Temple gave Cortland the 3-2 lead. Maggie Corbett added a third period goal to give the Red Dragons the final margin.

In goal, Brown made 38 saves for William Smith. On the other end of the ice, Meunier settled down after allowing two goals on four shots to make 31 saves.
