Herons rally past Oswego 5-4 in OT

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team rallied for a 5-4 overtime victory over ECAC West foe Oswego State at the Marano Campus Center Arena this afternoon. Five different players scored goals for the Herons as they extended their win streak to four games.

First-year Lindsay Brown scored her second goal of the season 2:16 into the overtime period to secure the victory for William Smith (8-10-2, 3-8-2). Sophomore Hedi Droste collected a loose puck at the blue line and fired a shot that Laker goalie Tori Trovato turned aside. The rebound came out to Brown in the slot. While falling to the ice, Brown wristed a shot over the sprawling Trovato, under the glove of an Oswego defender and into the back of the net. The win gave William Smith its third win in ECAC West play, one more than during last year's inaugural season.

The Herons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 3:50 of the first period when Catherine Linehan notched her third goal of the year. Linehan jumped on a rebound inside the left faceoff circle and fired a shot past Trovato into the open half of the net. Grace Durham was credited with an assist after firing the initial shot on goal from half board along the left wing. Thanks to 11 saves from Maggie Salmon, the Herons finished the period with a 1-0 lead.

Oswego (9-8-3, 5-7-3) scored the game's next three goals to take a 3-1 lead at 15:05 of the second period. Ashley Lyman scored to tie the game at 1, redirecting a pass from Alyssa Brockman past Salmon. Alli Ullrich scored at 14:07 to give the Lakers a 2-1 edge. She blasted a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and past Salmon into the goal. Fifty-seven seconds later Andrea Noss had a centering pass bounce off her left skate and into the goal to give Oswego a two-goal lead.

In the final minute of the second period, Kiley Fewster pocketed her fifth goal of the season on a rebound to cut the Laker lead in half. First-year Tess Madarasz came streaking into the attacking zone, fired a shot that Trovato stopped with her leg pads. The loose puck fell to Fewster's stick and she slid the ensuing shot, five-hole, past the Oswego goalie.

Durham added a goal of her own 47 seconds into the final period to tie the game at three.  Sophomore Morgan Bayreuther and Linehan were credited with the assists on the goal. Twenty-four seconds later, the Lakers regained the lead when Brennan Butler tucked a shot inside the left goal post.

Sophomore Krista Federow sent the game to overtime with her ninth goal of the season at 19:17 of the third period. She lifted a shot over the glove of Travato from a very tight angle. First-years Maura Mulligan and Stephanie Hampton were credited with assists on the goal. With the goal, Federow now has goals in four straight games and Mulligan extends her point streak to five games.

The five goals scored by William Smith are the most the Herons have scored in a single game in its first two seasons. With the first goal in today's game, William Smith improved to 7-1-1 on the season when it scored the game's first goal.

In goal, Salmon collected her fifth win of the season and made 26 saves in 61:59 of action for the Herons. Trovato played all 62:16 in the Lakers' goal and stopped 29 shots.

William Smith held a 34-30 advantage in shots on goal in a game that was back and forth from the opening whistle. Neither team was able to take advantage of the power play. Oswego posted a 0-for-4 mark on the power play, including an extended 5-on-3 opportunity midway through the first period. The Herons were 0-for-1 with the extra skater.

William Smith goes for its fifth-straight win when the Lakers make the trip to the Cooler tomorrow afternoon. Faceoff in the key ECAC West showdown is scheduled for 4 p.m.
