The William Smith College lacrosse team was edged 3-2 by No. 18 Geneseo in the season opener for both teams played this afternoon in Geneseo, N.Y. The Knights notched the game winner on a free position with just 6.9 seconds remaining.

Geneva Calder with 9:13 remaining in the first half. Kathleen DePillo put Geneseo on the scoreboard with 7:53 on the clock, making it 2-1 at the break. Erin Down assisted on the Knights goal.

With 10:15 left in the game, Down scored a goal of her own, with a player-up advantage, to tie the game up at 2-2. With 13 seconds left in the game, the Knights were awarded a free position chance. They did not capitalize, but were awarded another free position attempt with 6.9 seconds remaining. This time Liz Felix netted the game-winning goal.

Sarah Honan finished with four saves in goal for William Smith and Claudia Coleates made five stops for Geneseo. The Herons held an 11-9 advantage in shot, but Geneseo held a 15-11 lead in ground balls. William Smith was successful on 8-of-12 clear attempts, while the Knights were successful on 10-of-14 tries. The Herons held a 5-2 lead in draws.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, March 5, when they host Nazareth for its home opener at 11 a.m.
