Game Recap: Hobart Lacrosse | | Ken DeBolt

Aslanian’s 5th goal lifts Hobart to 2OT win at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y.—First-year attackman Chris Aslanian scored his career-high fifth goal of the game 1:09 into the second overtime to lift Hobart College to an 8-7 victory over Canisius College. The Westfield, N.J., native hit the upper right corner of the cage on an overhand jump shot from 17 yards out in front of the goal.

The Statesmen also got a pair of goals from senior attackman Frank Brown and first-year midfielder Bryan Hancock scored the other Hobart goal, the first of his career. Buffalo native, senior midfielder Cooper Stefaniak had a team-high four ground balls. Stefaniak and junior defenseman Arik Andreen each had two caused turnovers. Junior goalie Jackson Brown earned the win with nine saves.

Canisius got a team-high five points on three goals and two assists from sophomore attackman Connor Kearnan. Senior midfielder Nick Tuttle scored twice and had an assist. Junior midfielder Jeff Edwards added a goal and two assists. Sophomore goalie Liam Ganzhorn made 10 stops.

Canisius had a 41-33 advantage in shots, but Hobart won 10-of-19 faceoffs and committed five fewer turnovers (13-18). Ground balls were even at 21 apiece.

Edwards opened the scoring on a goal four minutes into the game. The Golden Griffins had a chance to add to their lead when Hobart was flagged for an illegal body check, but the Statesmen were able to kill off the penalty. Hobart was penalized for unnecessary roughness as the first quarter ended, giving Canisius another man-up to start the second quarter.

This time the Griffs cashed in when Tuttle scored 23 seconds into the frame. Two minutes later, the senior scored his second of the quarter for a 3-0 Canisius lead. With about eight minutes to go in the half, Hobart got on the board when Frank Brown unleashed a laser from 20 yards out in front of the cage. The Golden Griffins added to their lead with about three minutes to go when Ganzhorn made a long clearing pass to Kearnan, who was unmarked in the left corner of the attack zone. Kearnan faked a shot to the near post that Jackson Brown bit on leaving the rest of the cage open. Aslanian answered with 24 seconds left in the half. He got past his defender and rushed toward the right post, scoring on a bounce shot from 5 yards out.

Frank Brown opened the second half scoring, running around the crease to the left side of the cage, beating Ganzhorn over his left shoulder. Canisius had an extended possession near the middle of the stanza that senior attackman Vince Gravino finished with an overhand, high-to-low shot from just off the left goal post. The Griffs made it 6-3 when Edwards and Kearnan ran a perfect pick and roll with the latter netting his second of the game with just under two minutes left in the third quarter.

Aslanian started the fourth quarter scoring with a tally that was almost an instant replay of his first goal of the night. Kearnan completed his hat trick with just under seven minutes to go, stretching the Canisus lead to 7-4. A minute later, Aslanian got it back to a two-goal game with his third of the night, a low shot to the lower left corner of the cage. With less than two minutes left in regulation, Frank Brown fired a shot over the crossbar that Hobart backed up. Hancock scooped up a ball on the endline and went straight to the front of the goal, scoring on a shot over the head of Ganzhorn to make it a one-goal game with 1:42 to go. On the ensuing faceoff, Canisius was whistled for a violation giving the Statesmen the ball with a chance to tie. After a couple of wide shots by the Statesmen, Aslanian rifled home his fourth goal of the game with 24 seconds left necessitating overtime.

In the first overtime, Jackson Brown lost his stick, but stayed in the crease and made a save that kept the game tied. He was called for an illegal procedure penalty for not playing with the proper equipment, but he extended the game to set the stage for Aslanian's heroics in the second overtime. Canisius (1-2) was 1-for-4 with the extra man on the night.

Hobart (4-3) will open Northeast Conference play on Saturday, March 19, when the Statesmen travel to Wagner College. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
