Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

#6 Herons cruise to 7-0 win in opener

GENEVA, N.Y. – The sixth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team scored three goals in the first half and four in the second on its way to a 7-0 season opening win over Morrisville State on McCooey Field this evening. The Herons used a balanced attack, six different players scored, to topple the Mustangs.

Senior Alessandra Patrizio led the way for William Smith with four points (2g). Juniors Maura Moran and Alexandra Frary each added four points (1g, 2a) for the Herons.

William Smith opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Moran notched the first goal of the season. She collected a pass from Frary, broke into the arc and fired a shot past the Morrisville goalie. Forty-one seconds later Moran returned the favor. She set up Frary's first goal of the season firing a pass through the 16-yard arc. Frary used a quick flick to beat Meredith Koziol, the Mustang goalie.

Sophomore Fallon Adair collected her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Following a penalty corner, she collected a loose ball in front and deposited a shot into the back of the net. Adair's goal gave the Herons a 3-0 lead headed into the half.

Patrizio scored the first of her two second half goals in the 48th minute. She collected a pass from senior Lindsay Brandt right in front of the cage and buried the scoring opportunity. Twenty-six seconds later, Brandt added a goal of her own. She found herself all alone behind Koziol with the ball and fired the shot into the open cage. Frary was credited with the assist on the goal.

Patrizio notched her second goal of the game on a redirection in the 59th minute. Moran's initial shot beat Koziol, but was headed wide. Patrizio used her reach to change the shot's direction and send it into the back of the net. Junior Hannah Wood closed out the scoring 45 seconds later.  She dribbled the ball into the arc and fired home a shot.

William Smith showed off its depth in the midfield, keeping the ball in the Herons' attacking half for a majority of the game.

Senior Biz Chirco got the start in goal for William Smith and played the first 35 minutes making one stop. Senior Amy Feda and junior Emily King both saw playing time in the second half. Koziol played all 70 minutes in the Mustang goal and collected 10 saves.

William Smith dominated the final box score outshooting Morrisville 29-4 while holding a 12-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Herons return to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Collegeville, Pa. to take on preseason No. 4 Ursinus.
