GENEVA, N.Y.- The sixth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team cruised to a 5-0 win over Oneonta on McCooey Field this afternoon. Junior
Hannah Wood recorded a game-high seven points, including her fifth career hat trick in the victory.
Â
Wood 7 (3g, 1a), sophomore
Fallon Adair 4 (1g, 2a), senior
Alessandra Patrizio 3 (1g, 1a), and senior
Cydney Conley 2 (2a) all recorded multi-point games for the Herons.
Â
William Smith (3-1) opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Wood blasted home a shot from the top of the 16-yard arc. The goal came on William Smith's second penalty corner of the game. Conley and Adair were credited with assists on the goal. Adair inserted the ball to Conley who stopped it at the top of the arc for Wood to fire past Cassandra Miller, the Red Dragons goalie.
Â
The Herons doubled their lead in the 22nd minute when Patrizio collected a rebound out of midair and batted it past Miller. The goal was Patrizio's team-leading fifth of the season and the 99th point of her career. Miller stopped Wood's initial attempt but could not control the rebound. Just under three minutes later, Adair notched her second goal of the season. She snuck behind the Oneonta goalie and redirected a Wood shot into the back of the cage. William Smith went into halftime with a 3-0 lead and a 17-2 edge in shots.
Â
The Red Dragons (1-3) opened the second half with momentum. They earned the half's first three penalty corners but were unable to solve the Heron defense. Senior
Austen Gillen-Keeney bailed the Herons out recording a defensive save in the 42nd minute.
Â
Wood's second goal of the game came in the 53rd minute to make it 4-0 Herons. She collected a pass from Patrizio at the top of the arc, turned around, and sent a low shot past Miller and into the net. The assist was Patrizio's 100th career point. She is the 16th player in school history to hit the 100-point plateau. The last time the Herons had a pair of 100-point players on the roster was the 2001 season when Jackie Hall '02 and Nicky Livingston '02 both hit that mark.
Â
Wood completed her hat trick in the 60th minute off of William Smith's 11th and final penalty corner of the game. In a similar fashion to her first goal of the game, Adair inserted the ball to Conley who teed up the shot for Wood to fire home. With seven points this afternoon, Wood now sits alone in sixth on the school's all-time points list with 123.
Â
Senior
Biz Chirco made a single stop as she collected her third career shutout. At the opposite end of the field, Miller made eight saves in 70 minutes of action.
Â
The Herons dominated the stat sheet outshooting Oneonta 26-5 and earning 11 penalty corners to the Red Dragon's six. All six corners came in the second half where Oneonta held a 6-3 edge.
