#9 Herons to host William Smith Classic this weekend

The ninth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team will host the 2016 William Smith Classic this weekend during Hobart and William Smith Colleges' Homecoming and Family Weekend. The Herons welcome Lebanon Valley, Manhattanville, and St. Lawrence to Geneva for four games this weekend on McCooey Field.
 
On Saturday, Sept. 17, William Smith will take on the Valiants at 11 a.m., while the Saints and Dutchmen will square off at 2 p.m. Sunday will see St. Lawrence take on Manhattanville at 11 a.m. and the Herons face Lebanon Valley at 2 p.m.
 
William Smith (4-1) is led offensively by the dynamic duo of senior Alessandra Patrizio and junior Hannah Wood. Through five games, they both have seven goals, two assists and 16 points. Wood and Patrizio also lead the Liberty League in goals and points per game. In Tuesday's 6-2 win over Nazareth, they shared game-high honors with five points apiece. Junior Maura Moran leads the team and is tied for the conference lead with four assists. She is third on the team with eight points. Entering the weekend, William Smith's offense is sixth in the nation in points (12.0) and assists per game (3.2), ninth in goals per game (4.4), and 10th in scoring average. Senior Biz Chirco has started all five games in goal for the Herons, posting a 0.98 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
 
Lebanon Valley (4-1) comes to Geneva after defeating Lynchburg College 3-2 on Tuesday. The Dutchmen are led offensively by Maddie Fox's six points (2g, 2a). Megan Arnst is tied with Fox with two goals while Rachel Gorman is tied for the team lead with two assists. Sarah DiMaggio has started four games in the Lebanon Valley goal. She owns a 2.12 goals against average and a .556 save percentage.
 
The Valiants bring a 3-2 record to McCooey Field this weekend. In the midst of a season-opening 10-game road trip, Manhatanville is coming off a 2-1 win at St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday. Bregie Smits leads the team offensively with five goals and 12 points. Melissa Stys leads the team with five assists. In goal, Kaitlin Halloran has seen a majority of the action. She owns a 1.55 goals against average and a .786 save percentage.
 
The Saints are 3-1 entering this weekend's action and have not played since Saturday, Sept. 10 when they beat Wells 5-3. Lucy Stillman leads St. Lawrence with four goals and nine points. Bailey Sherwin is right behind her with three goals and six points. Carly Dziekan has a team-high three assists. Lexi Oskam has played all 280 minutes in the St. Lawrence cage and sports a 2.75 goals against average and a .703 save percentage.
