Lebanon Valley edges #9 William Smith 4-3 in double overtime

GENEVA, N.Y.- The ninth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team was edged by Lebanon Valley 4-3 in double overtime this afternoon. The Dutchmen twice rallied in the second half to secure the non-conference victory.

Eighty-five minutes was not enough time to separate the Herons (5-2) and Lebanon Valley (6-1). Just over five minutes into the second overtime, Lebanon Valley earned a penalty corner. Rachel Gorman inserted the corner to the top of the arc. Casey Dumbrowski picked up the loose ball, dribbled it into the attacking arc, and sent a crossing pass to Maddie Fox. Fox wound up and shot the ball past William Smith goalie Biz Chirco into the cage.

William Smith opened the scoring in the 13th minute when junior Maura Moran pocketed her fourth goal of the season. Senior Alesandra Patrizio collected a loose ball off a rebound and fired a shot towards the goal.  Moran deflected the shot past Lebanon Valley goalie Sarah DiMaggio. In the 22nd minute senior Jessica Borbee doubled the Herons' lead when she collected a rebound and fired a shot home from inside the left post. William Smith's defensive unit played strong in the first 35 minutes holding the Dutchmen without a shot.

Lebanon Valley hit the ground running to start the second half, cutting into the deficit in the 41st minute. Brittany Fleisher collected a rebound and beat Chirco's outstretched pad. The Dutchmen drew level in the 55th minute when Fox tallied her first goal of the game. Megan Arnst was credited with the assist.

William Smith reclaimed the lead when junior Hannah Wood notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Moran was credited with the assist as the inserter of the penalty corner.  The goal was Wood's 60th career goal and moves her into sole possession of second place in program history in career goals, 29 behind Assistant Coach Sophie Riskie '07.

Lebanon Valley retied the game just over two minutes later when Gorman pocketed a goal off of a scramble in front of the cage.

At the end of regulation the Herons held a 21-10 edge in shots and a 12-5 edge in penalty corners.

The first extra session saw great goaltending on both ends of the field. Chirco and Sarah DiMaggio were perfect each stopping four shots.  In the 79th minute, off a penalty corner, Chirco came up big for William Smith making a pair of pad saves on Fox and Rachel Youngs. In the 81st minute she made a spectacular glove save on Fox.  In the closing minutes of the first extra period DiMaggio made a pair of diving stops on sophomore Sierramarie Fitzgerald and Wood. Sophomore Alanna Fitzgerald played well in overtime and anchored the Herons backline throughout the game.

The Herons outshot Lebanon Valley 29-17 and earned 12 penalty corners to the Dutchmen's seven.

In goal, Chirco made a season-high nine saves in 90:33 of action. On the other end of the field in the Lebanon Valley cage, DiMaggio made 13 saves, playing every minute.

William Smith returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 24, when it travels to Troy, N.Y. The Herons will take on Rensselaer in the Liberty League opener for both teams.
