Game Recap: Hobart Basketball | | Ken DeBolt

Union rallies past Hobart in OT

GENEVA, N.Y.—Union College senior guard Deshon Burgess hit a 3-pointer with 7.4 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime and the Dutchmen pulled away from Hobart College in the extra period for a 69-61 Liberty League victory tonight.

Burgess finished with a game-high 25 points, 11 rebounds and a game-high four assists. Junior forward Greg King added 20 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Kevin McNoble chipped in 10 points off the bench. Senior guard Wade McNamara grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

Hobart (7-5, 2-1) got 21 points and a team-high 13 rebounds from sophomore guard Jamal Lucas. Classmate Colin Dougherty joined him in double digits with 11 points.

Burgess hit his game-tying shot with a hand in his face. It was the only one of six 3-point tries that he made on the night.

In overtime, McNoble hit a 3-pointer to give the visitors the early lead, but Lucas gave the Statesmen a 1-point lead by scoring four consecutive points. Unfortunately for the home team, they were the only four points Hobart scored in OT. King hit a 3-pointer to put Union (6-7, 2-3) back in front, kick-starting a 9-0 finishing run.

A back-and-forth affair that featured 18 lead changes and seven ties, Hobart had a chance to put the game away in regulation, but twice in the final 30 seconds of play missed the front end of a 1-and-1 that would have made it a two-possession game. The Statesmen also got off a solid 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it only drew iron.

It's the second time in as many meetings that the Statesmen and Dutchmen have gone to overtime. Hobart beat Union 84-82 to close out the 2015-16 regular season.

Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 13, when the Statesmen host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 8 p.m. Union is of until Jan. 20 when its hosts Bard College.
