Herons soar past Kangaroos 4-1

CANTON, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 4-1 win over SUNY Canton at the Roos' House this afternoon. Four different players tallied goals for the Herons in the victory.
 
William Smith (4-7-2) opened the scoring 65 seconds into the game when first-year Taylor Morash pocketed her third goal of the season. She collected a rebound below the faceoff circles and wristed a shot over Brooke Susac's glove. Sophomore Gina Scibetta was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
Just over four minutes later, the Kangaroos (6-8-0) tied the game at 1-1 when Tess Adams knocked in a rebound for her tenth goal of the season. Margret Troiano collected an assist on the goal.
 
The Herons regained the lead at 18:17 of the third period when junior Krista Federow scored her second goal of the season. Sophomore Stephanie Hampton forced a turnover deep inside the attacking zone and poked the puck forward along the boards to Federow. Federow wrapped around the back of the net and tucked the puck just inside right goal post.
 
William Smith extended its lead at 7:19 of the third period, when Hampton scored her third goal of the season. She fired a one-timer past Susac from the slot. First-year Kate Klimaszewski and Maura Mulligan were credited with assists on the goal. Sophomore Lindsay Brown added an insurance goal at 9:14 of the third period. She took the puck off the boards and wristed a shot across the goal line. Tess Madarasz and Rachael Barry tallied assists on the goal.
 
First-year Devon Strachan stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced on her way to collecting her first collegiate win. At the opposite end of the rink, Susac made 23 stops for SUNY Canton.
 
 Neither team scored a power-play goal.
 
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14 when it takes on ECAC West foe Buffalo State. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Kangaroos who wrap up a stretch of four games in five days will be back in action on Jan. 19 when it takes on Johnson & Wales in Providence, R.I.
