Herons rally for 7th straight win

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team rallied from an eight-point third quarter deficit to earn its seventh consecutive win by a score of 61-58 at Clarkson University this evening. Sophomores Natalia Baum and Mia Morrison combined for 32 points, 18 rebounds, and seven steals for the Herons.

Baum recorded a team-high 17 points, matching her season high, a team-high nine rebounds, and a game-high five steals. Morrison produced 15 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and two steals. They were joined in double digits by senior Alyssa DiCampli. She made both of William Smith's 3-pointers in the game and finished with 12 points.

The Golden Knights also had three players in double figures led by Devin Sorrell's game-high 18 points. Kathleen Coloney and Stephanie Grobe contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. Madison Shea grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Clarkson led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and took a 31-26 lead into halftime. The Golden Knights (8-8, 3-4) stretched their advantage to a game-high eight near the midpoint of the third quarter.

The Herons (12-3, 6-0) still trailed by five with about five and a half minutes to go thanks to a 3-pointer by Sorrell. At that point, William Smith turned up the defensive pressure, forcing CU to miss its next six shots. At the other end of the floor, DiCampli, Morrison, Baum, and Patterson made baskets for the Herons, building a three-point lead with 3:09 remaining.

Morrison made it a four-point edge by making one of two free throws with 64 seconds left. Sorrell finally broke Clarkson's scoring drought with a 3-pointer closing the gap to just one, but Baum answered with a jumper to make it a three-point game again. The Knights turned the ball over on their next possession, courtesy of Baums' career-high fifth steal.

In the final 15 seconds, CU had just one shot that could have tied the game, a shot at the buzzer that was off the mark.

After shooting 35 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, William Smith shot 48 percent in the second half. The Herons were just 2-of-10 from 3-point range and struggled at the free throw line making just 5-of-17. Clarkson shot 35 percent from the field, 39 percent from beyond the arc, and 50 percent at the line.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when the Herons visit St. Lawrence University. Tipoff in Canton is scheduled for 2 p.m.
