GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior
Jordan Haskell scored the game-winning goal 39 seconds into overtime to clinch a 3-2 win for the No. 6/7 Statesmen hockey team over Stevenson in an ECAC West game played tonight in The Cooler. Hobart extends its unbeaten streak to 11 games.
The Statesmen are now 14-2-3 overall and 6-2-0 in the ECAC West. The Mustangs are 9-9-2 overall and 4-5-1 in conference action. Tonight's game was Hobart's fifth overtime game this season. Haskell and junior
Vincent Russo each notched a goal and an assist for the Statesmen. Junior
Frank Oplinger played all 60:39 in goal and made 29 saves.
Senior
Nick Bingaman struck first for Hobart just 26 seconds into the game. His team-leading 14th goal of the season came off a short pass from classmate
Bobby Sokol. The Statesmen had a couple more close calls in the first. Senior
Connor Simon blasted a shot from the blue line off the right post, and late in the period it appeared sophomore
Cam Shaheen had tipped in a shot by senior
Jon Neal from the blue line, but the goal was called off for high-sticking.
At 6:01 into the second period, Haskell collected a pass from junior
Ben Greiner and carried the puck into Hobart's offensive zone. He maneuvered around a Stevenson defender and dished to Russo on the right side, who tallied his fourth goal of the season to make it 2-0. Just over five minutes later, Christian Ripley took advantage of a five minute major penalty called on the Statesmen to get Stevenson on the board. Oplinger got a piece of Ripley's shot with his glove, but wasn't able to make the stop, as it found the back of the net. Jordan Watt and Mike Davis logged the assists.
Just 6:53 into the third period, Jake McNamara knotted the game up at 2 after a pass from Davis. His blast from the blue line was enough to send the game into overtime as neither team could net the game-winner through regulation.
The Statesmen secured the win just 39 seconds into the extra period. Haskell scored his third goal this season through traffic in front. Russo and Greiner were credited with the assists.
Each team registered 31 shots in the game. Hobart went 0-for-7 on the power play and Stevenson finished 1-for-6. Jacob Caffrey played all 60:39 in goal for the Mustangs and made 28 saves.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 3, when they travel to take on Nazareth in another ECAC West game at 7 p.m
