Herons, Knights skate to 2-2 tie

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team earned a valuable point in the ECAC West standings with a 2-2 tie against Neumann this afternoon. The Herons set a program record firing 59 shots on goal in today's contest.

William Smith (4-11-3, 1-8-2) opened the scoring at 4:11 of the first period when first-year Taylor Morash pocketed her fourth goal of the season. She collected a pass from classmate Gina Scibetta off of the end boards and backhanded a shot past Neumann goalie, Helen Cooney. Scibetta and sophomore Egan Sachs-Hecht were credited with assists on Morash's goal.

Just under five minutes later, Neumann (6-10-2, 2-7-2) tied the game when Kelly Fox fired home a rebound past Devon Strachan. Bek Lucas, who took the original shot from the point, was credited with her team-leading 16th assist on the goal. The Herons dominated the opening period, outshooting the Knights 15-8.

Cooney stood tall in goal for Neumann in the second period stopping all 20 William Smith shots she faced. Strachan made seven stops in the middle period.

The Herons regained the lead at 4:25 of the third period when junior Krista Federow tipped home her fourth goal of the year. With William Smith on a power play, she redirected a Rebecca Begley shot over Cooney and into the back of the net.

Neumann tied the game 2-2 at 9:48 of the period. Jackie Schneider tipped home a loose puck off a Sammy Patrick shot. The power-play goal was scored while the Knights had an extra skater on the ice due to a delayed penalty call.

William Smith had chances to win the game late in the third but could not fire a puck past Cooney. Federow and Kate Klimaszewski both had golden scoring opportunities robbed by the Neumann goalie in the closing seconds of regulation.

The Herons took five of the six shots in the overtime period.

Strachan improves to 1-4-2 on the year after making 22 saves in 64:51 of action. Cooney played well in the Neumann goal, making 57 saves.

Both teams scored a power-play goal in the game. William Smith finished the game 1-for-7 with the power play, while the Knights went 1-for-5 with the extra skater.

William Smith and Neumann will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
