Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Herons clinch playoff berth with 3-1 win over Saints

GENEVA, N.Y.- The William Smith College field hockey defeated St. Lawrence 3-1 in a Liberty League contest on McCooey Field this afternoon. With the win, the Herons secure a spot in the four-team Liberty League tournament.

Three different players scored goals for William Smith (12-3, 4-2) in today's game. Sophie Cardenali made 11 saves for the Saints (5-10, 1-5).

Senior Alexandra Frary opened the scoring for the Herons in the 19th minute. She collected a rebound and fired home a shot from the right post. Off of a penalty corner, fellow senior Hannah Wood had her initial shot turned aside by Cardenali. The loose ball bounced to Frary, who scored her sixth goal of the season. Four minutes later, Wood notched a goal of her own. She played give-and-go with first-year Shayla Meehan at the 25-yard line, stepped into the 16-yard arc and buried a shot past Cardenali. The goal was Wood's 21st of the season. Meehan, who was credited with assist on the goal, collected her first collegiate point. Wood now has 214 career points, three shy of Assistant Coach Sophie Riskie's all-time record of 217 points.

William Smith controlled a majority of the play in the first half, holding a 15-5 edge in shots.

Junior Sierramarie Fitzgerald pocketed her seventh goal of the season in the 48th minute to give the Herons a 3-0 lead. Off of a penalty corner she collected a rebound and beat Cardenali with a shot that she tucked between the goalie's right leg and the left post. Cardenali made a kick save on a Wood shot from the point, but kicked the ball right to Fitzgerald's stick.

Melissa Grosshans broke up the shutout in the 58th minute. She redirected a Cate MacKenzie shot through Emily King's legs and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

King played all 70 minutes in goal for the Herons and made a pair of saves. Senior Maura Moran made a key defensive save in the 56th minute for the Herons. At the opposite end of the field Cardenali made 11 saves in 70 minutes of action.

William Smith finished the game with a 26-9 edge in shots. The Herons also earned 17 penalty corners to St. Lawrence's four.

William Smith will be back in action on Sunday when it takes on No. 17 Skidmore in the Liberty League finale for both teams. The game in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
