SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Hobart College football team outscored Union College 20-7 in the fourth quarter, but its late rally came up short and the Dutchmen were able to hold onto a 28-23 Liberty League victory. Statesmen senior quarterback
Shane Sweeney broke his own Hobart game records for pass attempts and completions, finishing the day 33-of-59 for 293 yards and a touchdown.
The Statesmen outgained the Dutchmen 388-335, but struggled to produce points until the fourth quarter.
Senior wide receiver
Brandon Shed was Sweeney's top target, pulling in 10 passes for 103 yards. It was his 15th career 100-yard receiving game. Junior wide receiver Joe Barrocas added a career-high eight receptions for 57 yards. First-year running back
Dakota Harvey gained 48 yards on nine carries and scored his Liberty League leading ninth rushing touchdown of the season.
Sophomore linebacker
Jedh Downey rang up a game-high 12 tackles for the Hobart defense.
Union (7-1, 3-0) quarterback Nick Cascione was 14-of-24 for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Travis Demby was his top receiver with six catches for 76 yards. Senior running back Connor Kinzelmann rushed 19 times for 41 yards and a TD. Cornerback Tucker Newman had a team-high 10 tackles.
Hobart (5-3, 1-2) won the battle for field position in the first half, but didn't put points on the board until late in the second quarter. First-year
Kyle Hackett made his seventh field goal in as many tries this season, booting a 28 yarder with 3:47 left in the half. It capped an 11-play, 47-yard drive.
Union countered with a 9-play, 72-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard Nick Cascione pass to Griffin Beal for a touchdown with 24 seconds left in the half.
The Dutchmen were forced to punt on the first possession of the second half, but the bouncing kick glanced off of a Statesman blocker and Union recovered at the Hobart 35. Three plays later, Alex Kaplanovich scored a touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Cascione for a 14-3 lead. Late in the third quarter, the Dutchmen reached the end zone on another long scoring play, this time Chris Nicholas broke a tackle for what should have been a 3-yard gain, but raced 64 yards for a TD and a 21-3 lead through three quarters.
Hobart got its first touchdown of the day with about nine minutes to go in the game. The Statesmen took advantage of a poor punt that gave them the ball at the Union 29. First-year running back
Dakota Harvey scored his Liberty League leading ninth rushing touchdown from 2-yards out to make it 21-10.
The Dutchmen countered with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that was highlighted by a 47-yard one-handed catch by Beal. Senior running back Connor Kinzelmann finished off the march with a 6-yard scoring run for a 28-10 lead.
The Statesmen answered with a nine-play, 70-yard drive that Sweeney finished off with a 9-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver
Jake Catalioto with 4:37 remaining. The extra point was blocked, leaving Hobart a 28-16 lead.
The Statesmen didn't go quietly, pulling within five with 25.9 seconds remaining thanks to senior running back
Joe Letizia's sixth rushing touchdown of the year. The 1-yard dive capped a nine-play, 84-yard drive.
Union recovered the ensuing onside kick and was able to run out the clock.
Hobart is off next weekend and will play its final home game of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Statesmen will host St. Lawrence at Boswell Field. Kickoff is at noon.
