PITTSFORD, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team rallied from a five-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to post a 69-66 non-conference win at St. John Fisher College tonight. The Heron trio of senior
Kendra Quinn-Moultrie and juniors
Natalia Baum and
Mia Morrison combined for 56 points.
Baum matched her career-high, scoring 20 points for the second time this season. She was 9-of-15 from the floor and also contributed eight rebounds. Quinn-Moultrie and Morrison each finished with 18 points. Quinn-Moultrie accounted for four of the Herons' five 3-pointers on the night. She also shared game-high honors with four steals. Morrison did most of her damage at the free throw line, making 12-of-14. She also collected a team-high nine boards.
The Cardinals (3-2) also had three players in double figures. Caroline Robertson and Nicole Robinson led the way with 16 points apiece. Robinson also had four steals and four blocked shots. Erin Hulbert netted 10 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and a game-high six assists.
Robertson sank a pair of free throws with 3:39 remaining in the game to give Fisher a 61-56 lead. Over the next 82 seconds, William Smith (3-1) outscored their host 6-1 with all seven points coming at the charity stripe. Junior
Olivia Hughes tied the game with a pair of freebies with just over two minutes left.
Chelsea Repard gave the Cardinals their final lead of the game, sinking a 3-pointer, but Quinn-Moultrie answered with a triple of her own at the other end of the floor. After that, the game was decided at the free throw line. Morrison made 1-of-2 for a slim Heron lead but Hulbert did the same at the other end to tie the game at 66 with 26 seconds left. Baum put William Smith on top for good by sinking the frontend of two and then the Heron defense came up with a huge stop.
As Hulbert tried to drive the lane, she lost the handle and first-year
Juliana Gamboa dove on the loose ball and Morrison asked for a timeout with four seconds left. William Smith advanced the ball across midcourt and Morrison was immediately fouled on the inbounds play. She made both free throws for a 3-point lead. Fisher managed a desperation heave from 50-feet away to try to tie, but to no avail.
A tight game from start to finish, the Herons built the largest lead of the game, a mere six points, late in the first half. Baum splashed a 3-pointer for a 29-23 lead 2:20 before halftime. St. John Fisher scored the next five points and trailed by just two at the break, 30-28.
William Smith begins conference play with its next contest. The Herons will travel to Union for a 6 p.m. tipoff on Friday, Dec. 1.
