#19 Hobart brews up victory at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The No. 19 Hobart College basketball team never trailed on its way to an 85-73 Liberty League win at Vassar College this afternoon. All five Statesmen starters reached double figures led by junior Colin Dougherty's season-high 25 points.

Junior Jamal Lucas opened the game's scoring with a 3-pointer, igniting a 14-4 run for the Statesmen (3-2, 1-1). Lucas logged 13 points and nine rebounds. First-year Dan Masino and sophomore Sam Allen also connected from long range during the opening surge. Masino posted his first collegiate double-double on 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Allen added 10 points.

Vassar fought back to get within two, 19-17, just over six minutes into the game, but Hobart used another 14-4 run to build a 12-point lead just over five minutes before halftime. Dougherty made a layup at the buzzer to second the visitors into the locker room with a 44-34 lead at the half.

The Statesmen shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half, canning six 3-pointers.

Hobart kept its momentum early in the second half, opening the final frame on a 16-6 run. Dougherty capped the run with back-to-back 3-pointers. Sophomore Tucker Lescoe (12 points) also made one of his three 3-pointers on the afternoon in the opening six minutes of the half.

Over the next four minutes, Vassar scored 12 straight points to get its deficit down to eight, but Dougherty stopped the Statesmen drought with a layup and a 3-pointer, pushing Hobart's lead back into double digits for good.

Jesse Browne and Hunter Gettings each scored 18 points to pace the Brewers (0-6, 0-2).

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 9, when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Carnegie Mellon (3-2). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
