Game Recap: William Smith Basketball | | Ken DeBolt

Morrison’s career night leads William Smith over Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—William Smith College junior Mia Morrison scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds to lead the Herons to a 72-61 non-conference victory at the College at Brockport tonight.

Morrison was 11-of-20 from the floor and 9-of-12 at the free throw line. She's the first William Smith player to score 30 or more points in a game since Mollie Danahy '11 produced 33 points against Wheaton (Mass.) on Dec. 30, 2008. Tonight was Morrison's fourth double-double in seven games this season. Sophomore Emma Gallagher added 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high four assists.

The Herons (4-3) shot 43 percent from the floor and 68 percent at the line. William Smith's shooting success was almost exclusively from inside the 3-point arc, where the visitors shot 55 percent (24-44). From long range, the Herons made just 1-of-14.

Powered by Morrison's 14 boards as well as eight more from senior Kendra Quinn-Moultrie, William Smith enjoyed a 44-33 advantage on the glass with yielded a 13-3 edge in second chance points.

Brockport, which has lost five in a row, slipped out to a 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Bailey Pratt and a jumper by Schyler Laux. The Herons swung the momentum back into their favor by the end of the first quarter, taking an 18-14 lead on Gallagher's 3-pointer just ahead of the end of the frame.

Just under two minutes before halftime, Quinn-Moultrie's old fashion 3-point play gave William Smith the largest lead of the half, 30-22. The Golden Eagles (2-5) scored five of the final seven points before the half to make it a five-point game at the intermission.

After trading baskets early in the third quarter, William Smith went on a 17-4 tear to break the game open. Morrison led the rush with nine points, including a pair of traditional 3-point plays. The Herons carried a 53-37 lead into the fourth quarter.

Brockport narrowed its deficit to as few as seven in the final 10 minutes, the last time on a 3-pointer by Laux with about two minutes left, but first-year Juliana Gamboa's layup about a minute later prevented the Golden Eagles from getting any closer. William Smith put the game away at the free throw line, making five of six in the final minute.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 29, when the Herons visit Nazareth College. Tipoff in Pittsford will be at 6 p.m.
