SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Hobart College sophomore
Colin Dougherty erupted for a career-high 32 points, but Skidmore College slipped past the Statesmen 87-83 in the Williamson Center tonight. The Thoroughbreds improved to 16-6, 11-2 in the Liberty League, while Hobart falls to 13-9, 8-5.
Dougherty was 10-of-15 from the field with three 3-pointers and 9-of-12 at the free throw line. He also grabbed eight rebounds. First-year guard
Tucker Lescoe added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore
Jamal Lucas finished with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Hobart shot 46 percent from the floor with 11 3-pointers and was 18-of-25 at the free throw line.
Skidmore was led by Aldin Medunjanin's 28 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Edvinas Rupkus posted 21 points and nine rebounds. Jack Morrow and Jack Byrne contributed 15 and 11 points, respectively.
The Thoroughbreds shot 41 percent from the field with 11 triples. The difference in the game was at the line, where Skidmore went 26-of-29.
A close game throughout the night, neither team led by more than eight points.
Hobart seized its largest lead of the night, 72-66, on a Dougherty layup with under six minutes remaining. Skidmore rallied with 10 straight points, including five from Medunjanin to take a four-point lead with four minutes to go.
The Statesmen struck back with seven straight points, including five in a row from Dougherty to take a three-point lead with two minutes to go. Morrow drained a 3-pointer to tie the game with 95 seconds left, but Dougherty sliced his way to the basket to put Hobart back in front once again.
Medunjanin scored the next six points of the game to give the Thoroughbreds a four-point lead. His first bucket tied the game with more than a minute remaining. After the Statesmen missed a 3-pointer, Medunjanin made an 18-foot jumper from the left wing to put his team in the lead for good near the 30 second mark. Hobart again misfired on a 3-pointer and was forced to foul. Medunjanin made both free throws.
Dougherty raced down the floor and made a layup with under four seconds remaining, but Skidmore was able to inbound the ball and Rupkus iced the game with two more free throws.
With three games remaining in the regular season, Hobart is in fourth place in the Liberty League, one game ahead of Clarkson. The top four teams compete in the conference championship tournament.
The Statesmen will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they visit Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (11-11, 5-8).
