Herons suffer setback at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Skidmore College used a 13-2 spanning the third and fourth quarters to seize control of tonight's Liberty League contest against William Smith College. The Thoroughbreds pulled even with the league leading Herons via a 75-57 decision in the Williamson Center.

Skidmore's Veronica Moceri powered the game-changing run with six of her 13 points on the night. Kelly Donnelly led the home team with game-highs of 33 points and 11 rebounds. Migle Vilunaite added 12 points and seven boards.

The Thoroughbreds (14-8, 10-3) shot 47 percent on their home floor after managing just 25 percent in Geneva last month. Skidmore went 23-of-32 at the free throw line, including an 8-for-8 effort by Moceri.

William Smith (16-6, 10-3) got a team-high 22 points from senior Melanie Patterson. She was 8-of-15 shooting with three 3-pointers. Junior Kendra Quinn-Moultrie chipped in 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Alyssa DiCampli had a game-high six steals in addition to seven points and four boards.

The Herons shot just 29 percent from the field and was 12-of-17 at the line.

A close game for most of the night, Skidmore led by three at the end of the first quarter and by one at halftime.

William Smith senior Gabrielle Eure made it a one-point game with a layup with about 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but Moceri made a pair of free throws to send her team into the final 10 minutes with a three-point lead.

Skidmore kept the momentum early in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Herons 11-2 in the first five minutes. Quinn-Moultrie ended a three-and-a-half minute scoreless streak for William Smith by sinking a pair of free throws to make it a 10-point game with 4:44 to go, but Donnelly scored the game's next four points and the Herons got no closer.

With three games remaining in the regular season, William Smith and Skidmore are tied atop the Liberty League standings, two games ahead of third place Clarkson. Both the Herons and Thoroughbreds can lock up a spot in the four-team conference tournament with wins tomorrow.

William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, when the Herons visit Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (8-14, 3-10). Skidmore hosts RIT (15-8, 8-6) at the same time.
