Hot-shooting RIT tops William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Rochester Institute of Technology shot 52 percent from the field and 61 percent from 3-point range in a 79-50 Liberty League win over William Smith College tonight. The Tigers had four players in double figures led by junior Jessica Glaz's game-high 18 points.

Glaz was 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-5 from deep. Senior Taylor Burns scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Cori Okada produced 15 points and a game-high seven assists. Sophomore Tara Lynch added 12 points.

Senior Melanie Patterson led William Smith with 11 points and four assists, while sophomore Mia Morrison had a double-double on 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Tigers (16-8, 9-6) shot the lights out in the first half, making 20-of-30 shots from the field, including 6-of-10 3-pointers. With the Herons (16-8, 10-5) scoring just two points in the first five minutes of the game, RIT built an 11-2 lead out of the gate and carried a 22-15 advantage into the second quarter.

The Tigers stretched their lead to a first half high of 22 with a 20-4 run in the second quarter. Patterson made a 3-pointer early in the quarter to cut the Heron deficit to six, but Okada scored 13 of her 15 first half points in the ensuing RIT surge to give the visitors a 44-22 lead. The Tigers led 48-29 at halftime.

RIT cooled off a bit in the second half, but William Smith was never able to get on track. The Herons, who shot 28 percent from the field in the first half, managed just 22 percent after halftime. William Smith scored seven straight points early in the third quarter to close the gap to 54-41 in favor of RIT, but Glaz nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead back to 19.

RIT will close out the regular season at home against Union College (12-10, 8-6) at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17. The Herons will also end the regular season against the Dutchwomen, traveling to Schenectady for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Sunday, Feb. 19.
