GENEVA, N.Y. – Junior
Maggie Salmon made 55 stops as the William Smith College ice hockey team upset Oswego, which was ranked 10th in the USCHO.com poll and eighth in the D3hockey.com poll, 3-1 in an ECAC West game at The Cooler this evening. The win was the Herons first ever win against a nationally ranked opponent.
"I am happy with the way the team came out and played tonight," Head Coach
Jaime Totten said. "Despite being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, tonight's win shows the improvement this team has made throughout the season. They fought for 60 minutes and the results showed on the scoreboard."
The Lakers (16-7-1, 10-6-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 3:40 mark of the first period when Julieann White pocketed her third goal of the year. White pounced on a rebound and flipped the shot past Salmon. Victoria Blake and Eryn Stewart were credited with assists.
William Smith (7-12-5, 4-9-4) had a chance to tie the game at 14:57 of the first period. An Oswego defender closed her hand on the puck in the goal crease and the Herons were awarded a penalty shot. Sophomore
Stephanie Hampton took the shot but her attempt was turned aside by Mariah Madrigal. The Lakers held a territorial advantage throughout the first period and outshot the Herons 20-7 in the opening 20 minutes.
Hampton tied the game at the 8:20 mark of the second period when she collected her own rebound and beat Madrigal with a wrist shot. The power-play goal was Hampton's team-leading sixth of the season, a new career-high. Seventy-seven seconds later, sophomore
Lindsay Brown deposited her fourth goal of the season behind Madrigal. Sophomore
Tess Madarasz broke up an Oswego clearing attempt below the goal line and fed the puck to Brown in the slot. Brown deked around a defender and wristed the shot over Madrigal's blocker and into the net.
Salmon made 22 saves in third period as the Herons held on to a one-goal lead. Her biggest save of the night came with just under nine minutes remaining in the period. Olivia Ellis broke free in the slot and fired a one-timer on goal. Salmon made a shoulder save and held on to puck.
First-year
Gina Scibetta added an empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining to give the Herons the 3-1 victory. Hampton and junior
Rebecca Begley were credited with assists on the goal.
Salmon collected her career-best sixth win of the season in 60 minutes of action in the William Smith goal. The 55 saves were the most saves by a Heron goalie in a win in regulation, Salmon had 57 in an OT win over Neumann back in 2014. At the opposite end of the rink, Madrigal made 16 saves in 59:11 of action.
Oswego entered the night with the ECAC West's best power play but was limited to just one goal on its seven attempts. The Herons went 1-for-4 with the extra attacker.
William Smith will conclude its season regular season tomorrow in Oswego. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
