Statesmen top Elmira 3-1 in regular season finale

ELMIRA, N.Y.—The No. 7 Hobart College hockey team defeated Elmira College 3-1 an ECAC West game and the final game of the regular season, played at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y., tonight. Three different Statesmen scored in the win and each Hobart goal came on special teams.

Hobart is now 17-4-4 overall and 9-4-1 in the ECAC West. The Soaring Eagles finish their season with an 8-16-1 overall mark and a 3-11-0 conference record. Sophomore Jack Macnee led the Statesmen with a goal and an assist. Junior goaltender Frank Oplinger made 23 saves in the win.

The first period proved scoreless, but one of Elmira's best scoring chances came with just under 10 minutes left in the first period. A shot by the Soaring Eagles was saved by Oplinger, but the rebound bounced around in the crease. Senior Michael Russo was there to clear the puck out and keep Elmira off the scoreboard.

With just over seven minutes to go in the second, sophomore Cam Shaheen put Hobart up 1-0 with a shorthanded tally. Macnee collected the puck on an Elmira turnover at center ice, and pushed a pass to Shaheen who skated in for a one-on-one with the Soaring Eagles' goaltender, and notched his second goal in as many days.

Just under two minutes later, it was Macnee who made it 2-0 on a Statesmen power play. His one-timer from the top of the left circle came off passes from junior Tyler Wolf and first-year Julien Denicourt. It was Macnee's third goal this year.

At 4:54 into the third period, Nick Ford broke through for Elmira. His power-play goal came after the Statesmen were whistled for a five-minute major penalty. Harry Kramer and Connor Powell earned the assists. However, that was as close as the Soaring Eagles could get as senior Nick Bingaman added another power-play goal for Hobart with 1:21 left in regulation. Senior Carl Belizario earned the assist. Bingaman leads Hobart with 17 goals this season.

The Statesmen finished with a 46-24 advantage in shots. Hobart went 2-for-12 on the power play. Elmira finished 1-for-6. Charl Pretorius made 43 saves in 58:50.

Hobart, the No. 3 seed in the ECAC West tournament, will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when it hosts No. 6 seed Stevenson at 7 p.m. in The Cooler.
