Game Recap: Hobart Lacrosse | | Ken DeBolt

Aslanian’s 13 power Hobart past Wagner

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore attackman Chris Aslanian erupted for a career-high 13 points and led the Hobart College lacrosse team to a 17-5 Northeast Conference victory over Wagner College on Boswell Field this afternoon. His point total—the most ever by a Division I Statesman and third most by a Hobart player all-time—came on six goals and seven assists.

To say the Westfield, N.J., native got off to a fast start would be an understatement. He had a hand in his team's first four goals, scoring the first and assisting on the next three as the Statesmen built a 4-1 lead.

Wagner first-year attackman Dominic Branda made it a 4-2 game four minutes into the second quarter. He was the only Seahawk with multiple points in the game, finishing with a goal and an assist.

Ninety-two seconds later, Hobart senior attackman Frank Brown backed his way down to the crease and dumped home his 12th goal of the season to kick start an 11-goal run. Aslanian jumped right back into the action, scoring or assisting on eight of the next nine Hobart goals. He produced three goals and four assists during the surge that bloated the Statesmen advantage to 14-2 with five seconds remaining in the third quarter.

On a day when everything seemed to go Hobart's way, sophomore Matthew Pedicine won the ensuing faceoff on a procedure call. Junior Henry Mann took the restart and heaved a 20-yard shot that skipped across the goal line with 0.1 seconds remaining.

Aslanian capped his spectacular day with the Statesmen's first goal of the fourth quarter, assisted by Brown.

Among Division I Statesmen, no one has scored more points in a game. The previous mark was nine shared by John Bogosian '03 and Cam Stone '14. All-time, only two Hobart players have logged more points in a game, John Topichak '71 (17 vs. Brockport, 1969) and Rick Gilbert '74 (15 vs. Geneseo, 1973).

Aslanian scored six goals, tying Hobart's record in a Division I game. Four Statesmen have combined to accomplish the feat six times previously. Aslanian assisted on seven goals, only Stone has had more in a Division I game (8 at Robert Morris, 2013).

Senior midfielder Sean Donnelly had three goals and an assist and first-year attackman Justin Scott extended his team best point streak to eight games with a hat trick. Brown began the day tied for 14th place on Hobart's Division I career points list and tied for 16th place on the DI assists list. With a goal and two assists today, he moved up to 12th place on the points list with 92 and into a tie for 13th place on the assists list with 31. Pedicine was 13-of-17 at the X and collected a game and career-high seven ground balls.

Not surprisingly, Hobart (4-4, 1-0) dominated the final box score, enjoying a 46-24 advantage in shots, a 33-20 edge in ground balls, and a 17-7 faceoff advantage. The Statesmen cleared the ball 92 percent of time, while limiting Wagner to a 71 percent success rate. The Seahawks (4-5, 0-1) managed to clear their defensive zone just twice on eight tries in the first quarter. Hobart was plus nine in turnovers.

In goal, Hobart senior Jackson Brown saved nine of the 12 shots he faced to earn the win. Sophomore Tristan Dougherty stopped two of four in relief. Wagner first-year Matt Sefcik, who came into the game with an 8.85 goals against average and a league-leading .582 save percentage, saved 10 of the 25 shots he faced before yielding to sophomore Omar Alhagiko, who made six stops and gave up two goals in the fourth quarter.

Hobart's 30 points and 13 assists on the day are the most by the Statesmen since recording those same stats in a 17-6 win over Canisius in 2009.

Hobart will continue NEC play at Sacred Heart (4-3, 0-1) on Saturday, March 25. Faceoff in Hartford, Conn., is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wagner will play NJIT (0-8) in a non-conference game later that evening. Faceoff at Drew University is scheduled for 7 p.m.
