Moore scores 36 seconds into 2nd OT for Heron win

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior Melissa Moore scored the game-winning goal 36 seconds into the second overtime to clinch a 6-5 win for the No. 17/11 Heron lacrosse team over No. 14/5 St. John Fisher in a non-league game played today on Boswell Field.

The Herons improve to 5-1 overall and served the Cardinals (3-1) their first loss of the season. It's the first win for the William Smith over St. John Fisher since a 22-21 win in 2010 in Rochester. It's also the third win this season for the Herons over a nationally-ranked opponent.

Moore led William Smith with four goals. It was her second four-goal game this season. Senior Allie Flaherty picked up a game-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior Jackie Rogers shared a game-high with three caused turnovers. Senior Sarah Honan made five saves in all 66:36 in goal for William Smith.

Jordan Johnson led the Cardinals with a goal and an assist and shared a game-high with three caused turnovers. Hayley Peets made 10 saves in 66:36 for St. John Fisher.

The Cardinals got on the board first 2:20 into the contest. Claire Bollin scored on a free position attempt. Just under three minutes later, Flaherty notched her sixth goal of the year off a feed from junior Kelsi Carr to knot the game at one. With 21:01 left in the first, Moore took advantage of a turnover by the St. John Fisher goalie caused by senior Alexandra Bird. Moore's ninth goal of the year gave the Herons a 2-1 advantage. With 2:23 before the break, Johnson tied things up at 2-2 for the Cardinals. William Smith had a chance to take the lead into halftime, but a free position shot by junior Ali Burns was saved by Hayley Peets with 39 seconds left in the first.

A free position goal by Cori Holbrook 3:07 into the second half gave St. John Fisher a 3-2 lead. Close to four minutes later, Mackenzie LeVan extended the Cardinals' lead to two. Johnson earned an assist on the goal. Back-to-back goals from Moore tied the game up at 4-4. Her second goal of the game came with 17:13 left in regulation. She came streaking down the right side and placed her shot top shelf. Her third goal came 28 seconds later off a feed from sophomore Bizzer Gahagan. With 11:06 left in the second half, Kelsi Schindler scored off a feed from behind the goal from Bollin to give the Cardinals a 5-4 advantage. However, Burns sent the game into overtime with her sixth goal of the season with 2:49 left in regulation. With just 25.9 seconds left in the second, it appeared the Herons had won on a goal by Bird, but it was called off and Bird received a yellow card.

With 1:41 left in the first overtime, the Cardinals were awarded a free position. Schindler fired a shot on goal, but the opportunity was denied with a huge save by Honan. In the first minute of the second overtime, Moore picked up a ground ball after a St. John Fisher turnover and registered her 12th goal of the season to secure the win for William Smith.

The Herons finished with a 25-10 advantage in shots and an 18-10 lead in ground balls. William Smith also held a 10-5 lead in draws. The Herons were successful on 16-of-20 clear attempts, while the Cardinals finished 13-of-21 clear attempts.

The Herons are back in action on Saturday, March 25, when they host Buffalo State for another non-league game at 1 p.m. on Boswell Field.
