Herons notch 5th straight win, top Vassar 14-4

The William Smith College lacrosse team used a 10 goal run to close out the first half and start the second on its way to a 14-4 win over Vassar. The No. 15/8 Herons are now 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League.
 
Vassar falls to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Junior Ali Burns and senior Alexandra Bird each notched five points on four goals and an assist. Junior Melissa Moore added three points on two goals and an assist and senior Allie Flaherty chipped in two goals. Sophomore Bizzer Gahagan logged a goal and an assist. Junior Kelsi Carr shared a game-high with five ground balls. Moore, Flaherty and sophomore Laura Rollins caused three turnovers. Senior Sarah Honan played all 60 minutes and made a season-high 12 saves.
 
Tessa Waters posted a goal and an assist for Vassar. Kelly Pushie added two goals. Emily Chancey played all 60 minutes in goal. She made 12 saves, shared a game-high with five ground balls, and caused two turnovers.
 
Just 57 seconds into the game, Flaherty opened the scoring for the Herons. Just over four minutes later, Pushie put Vassar on the board. William Smith then started its 10-goal run that closed out the first half and started the second. Bird started the run, and Burns made it 3-1 with 21:14 left in the first. Flaherty chipped in her second of the day and 15th of the year off a feed from Bird. With 18:12 on the clock, Bird netted her second of the day. Carr followed with her fifth goal of the season just under four minutes later. With 9:37 to go, Schmitt added her third goal of the spring off an assist from Moore. Burns registered her second of the day with 8:35 left in the first to make it 8-1. Just under 30 seconds later, Burns assisted on a goal by Moore. With 49 seconds left in the first, Bird gave the Herons a 10-1 lead at halftime.
 
Burns opened the second half rounding out her hat trick with 28:10 to go. Gahagan was credited with the assist. Pushie posted her second of the day with 21:29 remaining to make it 11-2. Back-to-back goals by Gahagan and Burns stretched the William Smith lead back to 11 with 17:50 left. Moore assisted on Gahagan's 13th goal of the year. It was Burns' fourth goal of the game and 15th of the season. With 11:15 left in regulation, Emily Hamburger scored off a feed from Waters for the Brewers' third goal. Bird notched her fourth goal of the day and team-leading 18th of the season. Waters closed out the scoring with 3:35 left in the game.
 
The Herons held a 33-21 advantage in shots and a 25-14 lead in ground balls. The Brewers logged an 11-9 advantage in draws. William Smith was successful on 16-of-18 clear attempts. Vassar was successful on 18-of-23 attempts.
 
The Herons are back in action on Tuesday, April 4, when they host Ithaca for a non-league game at 5 p.m.
