Heron 2V8 carries the day at Hamilton

ROME, N.Y.—The William Smith College rowing team won four of six races on the Erie Canal today, including a pair of victories by the Heron second varsity eight.

Under sunny skies and on calm waters, the second varsity eight of Alyssa Deem, Madeline Cook, Lizzy Houston, Elizabeth Warren, Giulia Acchione, Emma Lubrano, Jackie Steinman, Tatiana Loftus, and Lauren Pomerantz prevailed in races against RIT and Hamilton. The Herons opened the day's racing against the Tigers, posting a time of 7:24.7, 3.5 seconds ahead of RIT. Later in the day, William Smith enjoyed an 11-second win over the Continentals, logging a time of 7:27.6.

The Herons also earned wins in the varsity eight, defeating Hamilton, and the novice eight, besting RIT.

The 1V of Hannah Glenshaw, Bridget Kiejna, Karoline Loretan, Laurie VanBenschoten, Annika Linden, Jennifer Sullivan, Margaret Cameron, Anna Moreau, and Emma Hobika rebounded from a narrow defeat to RIT (-2.8 seconds) in the morning to top the Continentals in the afternoon. William Smith recorded a time of 6:59.7, 3.5 seconds in front of the host team. Against the Tigers, the Herons were down an entire boat length, but gained back four seats in the sprint before running out of race course.

The novice eight of Elisabeth Rowedder, Lindsay Carr, Tori Malamas, Carey Sevier, Catherine DiCara, Davida Eyam-Ozung, Emma Loubsky-Lonergan, Alexa Tierney, and Gabby Fraser outdueled RIT, crossing the finish line at 7:52.8, more than 50 seconds ahead of the Tigers.

William Smith's varsity four was beaten by Trinity (Conn.).

"We had a lot of great performances today," Head Coach Sandra Chu said. "I was very pleased with the way all of the boats applied the practices we've had this week. We were much more effective and urgent.

"The 2V impressed me with their composure today. They have made an enormous amount of progress in this area. The novice eight also showed off a steadiness in rhythm that they've been focusing on this week."

The Herons return to competition next weekend when they race on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
