Game Recap: Hobart Lacrosse | | Ken DeBolt

Brown’s big day boosts Statesmen into 1st place tie

GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior attackman Frank Brown enjoyed a record-matching day on Senior Day at Boswell Field, leading the Hobart College lacrosse team to a 15-8 Northeast Conference victory over Mount St. Mary's University. He tied the program's Division I record for goals in a game, scoring six times and adding two assists for a career-high eight points.

With today's results, the NEC Tournament field is set. Hobart (7-6, 4-1) and Robert Morris (9-5, 4-1) are tied for first place with the winner of next week's showdown in Moon Township, Pa., earning the regular season championship and the right to host the NEC Tournament. Bryant (8-6, 4-2) and Sacred Heart (8-5, 3-2) will complete the four-team field.

Brown is the sixth Statesman to score six goals in a Division I game, joining Chris Aslanian, John Bogosian '03, Jamie Breslin '01 (twice), Alex Love '15 (twice) and Daryl Veltman '08. Brown's big day raises his career totals to 75 goals (7th among Division I Statesmen) and 35 assists (12th) for 110 points (tied for 10th with Nathan Roost '98).

Junior midfielder J Andrew Spallanzani dominated the faceoff X for Hobart, winning 20-of-24 restarts and collecting a game-high 12 ground balls. His 20 wins and dozen ground balls are the most by a Statesman since Charles Sipe won 20 and picked up 13 ground balls against Loyola in 2013.

First-year attackman Justin Scott enjoyed a four-point game with two goals and two assists for the Statesmen. With 25 goals on the year, he is three goals off the Hobart Division I season record for a first-year. Senior goalie Jackson Brown made 10 saves to earn his Hobart Division I record 23rd career win.

For Mount St. Mary's (4-9, 1-4), sophomore attackman Chris DiPretoro scored half of his team's goal and added an assist for a five-point day. Senior midfielder Ryan Lamon chipped in two goals and an assist. Junior defenseman Daniel Barber recorded a game-high three caused turnovers. Junior goalie Matt Vierheller stopped 11 of the 25 shots he faced in just under 51 minutes of work. First-year Cameron Carpenter was credited with three saves in relief.

The teams traded goals to start the day, entering the second quarter tied at 3. The Mountaineers pushed into the lead with the only two goals of the second quarter for a 5-3 halftime advantage. DiPretoro scored for the third time with the first goal of the second half, staking the visitors to a 6-3 lead.

Forty seconds later, Brown ripped a shot inside the far goal post from about 12 yards out to end Hobart's scoring drought at 25:31. The goal also opened the flood gates. In a span of just two minutes and 38 seconds, the Statesmen turned a three-goal deficit into a two-goal lead. Senior midfielder Tanner John, assisted by senior midfielder Sean Donnelly, fired home a goal from almost the same spot as Brown's to make it 6-5. Then first-year midfielder Eric Holden scooped up a rebound and dunked it over Vierheller's shoulder to tie the game at the 6:46 mark. Brown and Scott followed with unassisted tallies 18 seconds apart to make it an 8-6 Hobart lead.

DiPretoro stopped the Statesmen run with his team-leading 29th goal of the year, but Holden set up senior midfielder Max Romm with 18.7 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 9-7 heading into the final frame.

The Statesmen left no room for a comeback scoring five goals in a span of four minutes early in the fourth quarter. Brown hit the back of the net twice and set up Romm's second goal of the day, while Donnelly and sophomore midfielder Bryan Hancock accounted for the other two goals, giving Hobart a 14-7 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Hobart outshot Mount St. Mary's 50-29, had a 40-26 edge in ground balls, and won 22-of-27 faceoffs. The Statesmen improved to 3-1 this season when they have 50 or more shots in a game.

Hobart closes out the regular season at Robert Morris on Saturday, April 29. Faceoff at Joe Walton Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
