Herons rally for 7-4 win at Clarkson

The William Smith College lacrosse team rallied for a 7-4 win over Clarkson in Potsdam, N.Y., this afternoon, securing at least a share of the Liberty League regular season title. The Herons are now 14-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
 
William Smith extends its win streak to 11 games. The Golden Knights fall to 9-6 overall and 2-5 in the Liberty League. Senior Allie Flaherty led the Herons with a game-high four points on two goals and two assists. She also produced a game-highs of five ground balls and four caused turnovers and added two draw controls. Flaherty now has 91 career draws which is tied for ninth in William Smith history. She also moved up to sixth on the Heron list for career caused turnovers (75).
 
Junior Ali Burns chipped in two goals. Junior Melissa Moore and sophomore BIzzer Gahagan each logged a goal and an assist. Moore also shared a game-high with four caused turnovers and added four ground balls. Senior goalie Sarah Honan made eight saves in the win. Honan is now tied for 10th on the William Smith single season list with her 14 victories this year.
 
Clarkson had four different goal scorers. Stephanie Scaia recorded team-highs of three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Samatha Gladd played all 60 minutes in goal and made nine saves.
 
 The Golden Knights jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first two minutes. Taylor Collins scored first and Abby Collins followed 33 seconds later. With 19:32 left in the first half, first-year Nicki Santora put William Smith on the scoreboard off an assist from Flaherty. Flaherty tied the game up at 2-2 with 9:45 left in the first. With 8:23 before the break, Emma Andrews took back the lead for Clarkson. Jaid Baytos earned the assist. However with just 40 seconds left in the first half, Moore knotted the game at 3-3 after a feed from senior Alexandra Bird.
 
The Herons took control in the second half scoring the first two goals after halftime and limiting the Golden Knights to just one goal in the final 30 minutes. Flaherty notched her 31st goal of the season 7:21 into the second to give William Smith the lead. Gahagan set up the play. With 18:12 remaining, Burns produced her first goal of the day to make it 5-3. Ashley Flick found the back of the net for the Golden Knights with 14:03 on the clock, but the Herons scored two more goals to close out the game. Gahagan scored her 18th goal of the year off an assist by Flaherty, and Burns tallied her second of the day and 26th of the season for the final.
 
The Herons held a 23-12 advantage in shots and a 16-12 edge in ground balls. Clarkson had a 7-6 lead in draws. William Smith was successful on 11-of-15 clear attempts, while the Golden Knights went 9-for-15.
 
The Herons are back in action on Friday, April 28, when they host Rochester for a Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
