#3 Herons edged by #15 Geneseo

Box Score The No. 3 William Smith College soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2017 season, falling 1-0 in a non-league game at No. 15 Geneseo tonight.

The Herons are now 3-1-0 overall, while the Knights improve to 5-0-0. In the 23rd minute, Domenica Piccoli scored for Geneseo, capitalizing on the Knights' only shot on goal in the game. After a corner kick, Sarah LeFrois collected the ball as the Herons' were trying to clear it away. She sent the ball back into the box to Piccoli who fired a shot off the far post and into the goal.

One of the William Smith's best scoring chances came in the fourth minute. First-year Shelia McQuillen beat the Geneseo defense for a free run at goal. The Knights' keeper Emily Janiszewski collided with the forward and was taken out of the play, but McQuillen continued on sending a shot on goal. However, LeFrois was at the goal line to clear the chance away.

The Herons finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 lead in corners. Janiszewski made five saves for Geneseo. Junior Veronica Romines played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith.

The Herons are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they travel to take on the University of Rochester in a non-league game at 7 p.m.
