Herons fly past Valiants 5-0

GENEVA, N.Y.- The 18th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team defeated Manhattanville 5-0 in the first game of William Smith Classic this afternoon. The win improves the Herons to 5-1 on the year.
 
Senior Alexandra Frary led the way for the Herons with a goal and an assist. Four other players scored goals in the victory for William Smith. Kaitlin Halloran made 20 saves in goal for the Valiants (1-5).
 
Wood opened the scoring in the 20th minute. She collected a loose ball behind Halloran, dribbled around a defender, and sent the ball across the goal line. The goal was Wood's 10th of the season and the 84th of her career.
 
Frary doubled the Herons lead in the 29th minute. She shot the ball from the right side of the arc off a Valiant player and into the goal.
 
The Herons defensive line shut down Manhattanville in the first half, owning a 20-0 shot advantage and a 6-0 edge in penalty corners.
 
In the second half, William Smith continued to apply the offensive pressure. Junior Fallon Adair collected her fifth goal of the season, redirecting a Maura Moran crossing pass into the back of the net. In the 57th minute, sophomore Elizabeth Carlson collected a ball at the top of the arc, dribbled around a defender, and fired the ball past Halloran.
 
In the 65th minute, junior Katie Battaglia scored her second goal of the year. Frary sent a crossing pass to Battaglia on the right post. Battaglia slid the shot into the goal.
 
Halloran stole the show for the Valiants stopping 20 shots in 64:09. The Manhattanville defense also came away with a pair of defensive saves. Senior Emily King got the win and played 56:54 in the William Smith goal.  First-year Alexandra DeVito made one save in relief.
 
William Smith dominated the game from the opening whistle, earning a 37-3 edge in shots and a 17-1 advantage in penalty corners.
