GENEVA, N.Y.- The 18th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Lebanon Valley 4-1 on McCooey Field this afternoon. The win was the fourth straight for the Herons.

Four different players scored goals for William Smith (6-1) in today's victory. Seniors
Hannah Wood and
Maura Moran led the way with a goal and an assist each. The Herons defensive line was strong all game, limiting the Dutchmen (3-4) to six shots in the game.

Sophomore
Elizabeth Carlson opened the scoring with her second goal in as many days. She flipped a shot over Victoria ByDeley and into the back of the net. The goal came on the Herons second penalty corner of the game. Juniors
Samantha Petruzzo and
Fallon Adair were credited with assists on the goal. Adair leads the team with nine assists this year.

Wood gave William Smith a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute. After being held in check for most of the first half, Wood collected a loose ball inside the circle, deked around the goalie, and buried the shot. The unassisted goal was Wood's 11th of the season. Now with 85 career goals, Wood needs four to match Assistant Coach Sophie Riskie's career record.

Junior
Katie Battaglia gave the Herons a three goal lead in the 49th minute. She batted Moran's crossing pass out of the air and into the cage. The assist was Moran's fourth of the season and 28th of her career. She is currently tied for fifth on the William Smith all-time assists list with Moria Lewis '88. Moran added a goal of her own in the 55th minute. Wood was credited with the assist. With the assist, Wood now has 190 career points, 27 shy of Riskie's career mark.

Lebanon Valley's Maddie Fox fired home a shot from the top of the arc in the 63rd minute to break the shutout. Rachel Kagarise picked up the assist as the inserter on the Dutchmen's penalty corner.

In goal, senior
Emily King played all 70 minutes and made three saves. At the opposite end of the field, ByDeley made nine stops in 54:47 of action. Kristi Langhans made a pair of saves in the final 15:13.

William Smith outshot Lebanon Valley 23-6, including a 12-2 advantage in the second half. The Herons finished the game with a 10-5 edge in penalty corners.

William Smith will return to action next weekend when they take on No. 16 Rochester on McCooey Field. The game will be the Liberty League opener for both teams.
