GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 7 William Smith College soccer team built a 4-0 lead in the first half, and went on to defeat Skidmore College 5-1 in the Liberty League opener for both teams today on Cozzens Field. Junior
Megan Barwick led the Herons with a goal and two assists.
William Smith is now 6-1-0 overall, while the Thoroughbreds fell to 2-5-0. Five different Herons scored in the win. Junior
Veronica Romines played the opening 45 minutes in goal and did not face a shot on goal. Junior
Kaileen Murray came in for the final 45 minutes.
Senior
Evie Manning scored first 16:56 in. Barwick sent a pass from just outside of the right post and Manning connected from right out in front for her fifth goal of the season. Barwick then notched a goal of her own just 2:13 later. Sophomore
Phoebe Wade placed her pass perfectly into the box so that Barwick could score on a low rolling shot. It was her fourth goal of the year. In the 24th minute, MacLean registered her first goal of the year. First-year
Julia Keogh fired a hard shot on goal, and the ball slipped through the hands of Skidmore's keeper right to MacLean who finished off the play, tapping the ball over the goal line. Sophomore
Elizabeth Moore made it 4-0 firing a shot through traffic in front of the goal after a corner kick sent into the box by senior
Theresa Lohr.
Skidmore came inches away from breaking through late in the first. The Herons tried to play the ball back, but instead turned it over to the Thoroughbreds'
Clare O'Connor who blasted a shot off the pipe. In the 71st minute, Emily Mendes capitalized on a penalty kick to put the Thoroughbreds on the scoreboard. Senior
Lauren Kogelmann gave the Herons back a four-goal advantage in the 77th minute. Barwick earned the assist on the set play after a free kick from just outside of the box. It was Kogelmann's first goal this year.
The Herons finished with a 25-4 advantage in shots and a 6-0 lead in corners. Alyssa Rollins played all 90 minutes in goal for Skidmore and finished with seven saves.
William Smith is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when they travel to take on RIT for another Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
