Game Recap: Hobart Soccer | | Paige Cooke

#4 Brandeis slips past Hobart in double OT

The Hobart College soccer team fell to No. 4 Brandeis 2-1 in double overtime in a non-league game played as a part of the Hobart Soccer Alumni Classic today on Cozzens Field. The Judges netted the game-winning goal in the 109th minute.

Brandeis improves to 1-1-0 this season, while the Statesmen fall to 0-2-0. The first half proved scoreless for both teams. In the 48th minute, sophomore Kyle Patrick put Hobart up 1-0. He had the ball just inside the box, and the Judges' keeper came out to play it, but wasn't able to get ahold of it. Patrick maneuvered around him and shot into the left side of the open net.

Brandeis responded just under three minutes later. Jack Warren pushed a pass to Noah Gans on his left. Gans blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and then slid over the line to knot the game at 1-1. Neither team could find the game winner through regulation.

With 3:40 left in the first overtime period, Hobart had a flurry of action on its offensive end. Sophomore Tristan Cornell Roberts sent a cross from the left side out in front of the goal. Senior Adrian Colmenares was there to put a header on goal, but the Judges' keeper Ben Woodhouse robbed the Statesmen's chance at the game winner with an outstanding save. Patrick also had a near miss for Hobart 6:26 into the second overtime, he drilled a shot off the crossbar.

It was Joshua Handler who scored the golden goal for Brandeis 8:24 into the second overtime period. Josh Ocel sent a short pass to Handler who settled the ball just inside the box. He fired his shot into the right side of the net to secure the victory for the Judges.

Woodhouse finished with 10 saves in goal for Brandeis. Junior Alec Kaminer made four saves in all 108:24 in goal for Hobart. The Statesmen finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corners. The Judges ended an 11 overtime game win streak for the Statesmen.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they host Rochester for another non-league contest on Cozzens Field at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Hobart and William Smith Colleges will also celebrate the Carver-DeLaney Family Press Box and Stadium Seating dedication at 10 a.m. at Cozzens Field.
