Geneseo edges Herons 4-3

The 20th-ranekd William Smith College field hockey team was edged 4-3 by Geneseo in a non-conference contest on McCooey Field this evening.

The Knights' Haley Clark led all players with two goals, while Giovanna Fasanello added a goal and an assist for Geneseo (2-1). Junior Fallon Adair led the way for William Smith (2-1), grabbing a pair of assists in the second half.

Junior Sierramarie Fitzgerald opened the scoring for the Herons in the 19th minute with her second goal of the season. She dribbled around a defender into the circle and slid a low shot past the Knights' goalie.

Geneseo answered back just over a minute later when Clark deposited her first goal of the game past the William Smith goalie. Fasanello was credited with an assist on the goal. Fasanello added a goal of her own two minutes later to give the Knights the lead.

After a pair of lightning delays that totaled 85 minutes, Geneseo's Cara Stafford collected a rebound and scored to give the Knights' a 3-1 lead. Stafford who had inserted the penalty corner stayed near the left post behind the Herons' goalie and flipped the loose ball into the goal.

Senior Hannah Wood scored her third goal of the season off of a penalty corner. Adair inserted the corner to Wood, who blasted the shot from the left side of the arc past Nicole Gregg and into the goal.

Clark's second goal of the game came 68 seconds later and gave Geneseo a 4-2 lead. She picked up a rebound in front of the cage and flipped the shot into the goal.

Junior Katie Battaglia scored her first collegiate goal in the 69th minute to bring William Smith within one. She collected a cross cage pass from Adair and redirected the ball into the goal. The assist was Adair's fifth of the season, a new career-high.

The Herons pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the final 1:27 of the game but could not get the ball back into the offensive end.

Gregg made seven saves in a relief appearance for Geneseo. In the William Smith goal, senior Emily King made six saves in the final 47:19 of contest.

The Herons held a slight 18-13 edge in shots and earned eight penalty corners to the Knights' three.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday at noon when it hosts preseason No. 7 Ursinus on McCooey Field.
