Herons use suffocating D to top Saints

CANTON, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team used a suffocating defensive effort to bottle up St. Lawrence University this afternoon. The Herons earned their fourth straight win by limited the Saints to 27 percent shooting on the way to a 59-43 Liberty League victory.

In addition to stifling SLU's shooters, William Smith (10-6, 4-5) controlled the boards, outrebounding the home team 49-36. Junior Mia Morrison led the way, recording her seventh double-double of the season on game-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds. She shot 8-of-15 from the floor and contributed to the Saints' shooting woes with a pair of blocked shots. Senior Kendra Quinn-Moultrie made three 3-pointers on her way to a 15-point, eight-rebound game. First-year Juliana Gamboa chipped in a career-high 14 points.

St. Lawrence (11-5, 6-3) came into the game riding a seven-game win streak, including a 64-63 win over league front runner RIT on Friday night. Cara Waterson was the only Saint in double figures, scoring 13 points. Katie Frederick had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Herons never trailed, opening the game on a 13-2 run. Quinn-Moultrie opened the day's scoring with a jumper and later added a 3-pointer. Meanwhile, SLU missed its first 10 shots from the field. The Saints used a 10-4 run to creep back within five, but William Smith rattled off 15 straight, second quarter points to break the game open. Quinn-Moultrie again fueled the run, dropping in back-to-back 3-pointers. The Herons carried a 32-14 lead into halftime.

William Smith added a third impressive run in the third quarter, scoring 11 consecutive points over a four and a half minute span that stretched its lead to 25, 45-20, with less than four minutes left in the quarter. Gamboa led the offense with five points. The Herons maintained a double digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 26, when the Herons host Ithaca (11-5, 6-3) at 6 p.m.
