GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior scored a game-high 23 points, including the 1,000th of his career, leading the Statesmen to a 99-89 Liberty League win over Ithaca College in Bristol Gym tonight. In the 108-season history of the program, Lucas is the 29th Hobart player to reach that career milestone.
Lucas was one of five Statesmen to hit double figures against the Bombers. He was an impressive 10-of-16 from the floor and hit 1,000 points on the nose, driving past two defenders for a left-handed layup with under 12 minutes remaining in the game. Dan Masino contributed 21 points and seven rebounds. Junior
Colin Dougherty, who scored his 1,000th point last Friday at Clarkson, added 19 points to his total moving up to 22nd on the all-time list. Sophomore
Edens Fleurizard posted his first career double-double on 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Sam Allen also had 11 points.
Hobart (14-3, 9-1) won for the eighth straight time, shooting 51 percent from the floor. The Statesmen had a 45-36 advantage on the glass and committed three fewer turnovers.
Ithaca (12-5, 7-3) put three players in double digits. Senior Marc Chasin made a bid for a triple-double, finishing with a team-high 17 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and a game-high eight assists. Sophomores Sebastian Alderete and Riley Thompson chipped in 15 points and 14 points, respectively. The Bombers shot 46 percent from the floor.
Hobart held the lead for the majority of the first half, but couldn't find any breathing room until late. About three minutes before halftime, Lucas drained a 3-pointer that ignited a 12-3 run for the Statesmen. Dougherty finished the flourish with the final six points of the half, sending the home team into the locker room with a 47-36 lead.
Lucas had a game-high 15 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Bombers opened the second half with some momentum, outscoring the Statesmen 16-8 to pull within three points. Thompson led the way with eight points during the push. Hobart used a 10-2 run, capped by Lucas' historic layup to push its lead back in double digits. The Statesmen led by as many as 17 down the stretch, until Ithaca made a late run that cut the lead down to seven with 42 ticks left.
Hobart was able to ice the win by making 3-of-4 at the free throw line.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they host RIT (8-9, 6-4). The Tigers are coming off a 67-49 loss at Rensselaer tonight. Tomorrow's tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 4 p.m.
