GENEVA, N.Y.- William Smith College junior
Maura Mulligan scored the game-winning goal 3:33 into overtime to clinch a 2-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference victory for the Heron hockey team against Manhattanville at The Cooler this evening. With the win William Smith improves to 12-4-3 overall and 8-1-2 in the UCHC.

Maggie Salmon was stellar in goal for William Smith, finishing the game with a season-high 40 saves in 63 minutes of action.

Catherine Linehan's third goal of the season opened the scoring at the 14:15 mark of the first period. She collected a centering pass from sophomore
Kate Klimaszewski and redirected the shot past Rose Pijaca. First-year
MaryKate Martino was also credited with an assist on the goal. Martino won a defensive zone faceoff and hit Klimaszewski in the neutral zone with a clearing pass. Klimaszewski carried the puck in behind the goal and slipped a pass to Linehan in the low slot.
Each team ended the first period with seven shots on goal.
The Valiants (9-8-1, 6-3-0 UCHC) dominated the second period earning a 19-9 edge in shots on goal but could not solve Salmon. Midway through the period Nicole Mensi had a pair of golden scoring opportunities turned aside, one by Salmon's glove, the other by her blocker.
Zoey Pellowitz nearly tied the game for the Valiants with two minutes left in regulation, but Salmon flashed her glove and turned aside the shot from the point.
With five seconds remaining in regulation Jennifer Machin found a loose puck in a pile of bodies and slipped the equalizer across the goal line. Janet Xu and Kristi Peters were credited with assists on the goal.
The Herons had all six shots of the overtime period. Three minutes into the extra session, Mulligan drew a tripping penalty. William Smith Head Coach

Krista Federow below the goal line with a one touch pass. Federow carried the puck behind the goal and fed a pass to Mulligan in the right faceoff circle. Mulligan one-timed the shot between the right post and Pijaca's left pad. The power-play goal was Mulligan's fifth of the season. Federow now has a league-leading 17 assists through 19 games.
Pijaca went the distance in goal for the Valiants and made 33 stops.
William Smith was 1-for-2 on the power play, while Manhattanville finished the game 0-for-2.
The Herons and Valiants will be back in action tomorrow. Faceoff at The Cooler is scheduled for 4 p.m.
