Hobart basketball to host Hoops Against Hunger game

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team continues its five-game homestand at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, when the Statesmen host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Bristol Gymnasium. The game will be the program's Hoops Against Hunger game.

Fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or make a monetary donation to the Geneva Center of Concern Food Pantry.

Hoops Against Hunger was started by Trey Blanding '15 in 2015. The inaugural event raised more than $700 in monetary and food item donations. Since 1971, the Geneva Center of Concern has provided a community safety net while promoting dignity, respect and self-empowerment.

Hobart is 15-3 overall and leads the Liberty League with a 10-1 conference mark. The Statesmen have four players averaging 10 or more points per game, led by junior Colin Dougherty's 16.4 ppg. Classmate Jamal Lucas contributes 15.4 ppg. Both Dougherty and Lucas recorded their 1,000th career points earlier this month. The former is 21st (1,075) on Hobart's all-time scoring list while the latter is 29th (1,010).

Sophomore Tucker Lescoe has a team-high 52 3-pointers and is averaging 13.2 ppg. First-year Dan Masino adds 12.1 ppg and a team-high 1.9 steals per game. Masino and Dougherty share the team lead in assists (3.1 apg). Lucas is Hobart's top rebounder, grabbing 5.8 rpg.

Rensselaer heads to Geneva with a 10-8 overall record and a 5-6 league record. Juniors Tom Horvat and Andreas Kontopidis pace the offense, averaging 19.2 ppg and 18.7 ppg, respectively. Horvat also boasts team-highs in 3-pointers made (51), assists (49) and steals (46).

The Engineers lead the all-time series against the Statesmen 67-48, but Hobart has won each of the past four meetings and 12 of the past 13. The teams squared off in Troy, N.Y., earlier this month with the Statesmen scoring a 69-57 win.

WHWS-FM (105.7) will broadcast the game live. Fans can also follow the action online with All-Access Video and Live Stats.
