HENRIETTA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior
Mia Morrison produced her fifth double-double of the season, but the Rochester Institute of Technology used a late run to pull out an 83-75 Liberty League women's basketball win.
Morrison was 9-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the line for her third 20-point game in the Herons' past five contests. First-years
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou and
Juliana Gamboa joined Morrison in double figures. Dimitrakopoulou matched her season-high with 15 points and Gamboa notched a season-high 12 points.
Cori Okada led the Tigers (8-1, 3-0) with game-highs of 26 points and five assists. Amanda Olsen contributed 14 points and a team-high eight boards. Sabrina Wolfe chipped in 11 points.
William Smith (6-4, 0-3) enjoyed a considerable advantage on the glass, outrebounding RIT 53-40, but the Tigers were plus-12 in turnover margin and made more free throws (18) than the Herons attempted (15).
The first 58 minutes featured an evenly matched back-and-forth contest. The game featured 20 lead changes and 11 ties with neither side leading by more than nine points.
RIT led by a single point, 45-44, at halftime, but William Smith scored 11 straight third quarter points to seize the momentum and carry a 64-59 lead into the final frame. Dimitrakopoulou made back-to-back layups to kick-start the Herons' 11-0 run.
Okada keyed the Tigers' fourth quarter comeback. She had a layup and an assist during an 8-0 run that put the home team up 70-67. Morrison gave William Smith its final lead of the night, making back-to-back jumpers for a 71-70 advantage with less than three minutes to play.
Over the next two minutes, RIT scored 10 straight points, including eight by Okada, to build a nine-point lead, 80-71 with just under a minute left. The Herons got within seven twice down the stretch, but each time the Tigers converted at the free throw line to keep the visitors at bay.
William Smith continues conference play at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Ithaca (8-2, 3-0).
