GENEVA, N.Y.-For the second straight game, sophomore midfielder
Kyle Mangold scored the only goal for the Hobart College soccer team. The Statesmen defeated Union 1-0 in a Liberty League match on Cozzens Field this afternoon.
With the win, Hobart has now won five straight games and is unbeaten in its last six. The Statesmen are now 6-4-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the Liberty League while Union drops to 5-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play.
In the 83rd minute, Mangold redirected a
Juan Widoycovich corner kick over the goal line. The goal was Mangold's second-straight game-winning goal and third tally in as many games. Standing on the near post, he used his head to angle Widoycovich's corner over the goal line.
The Dutchmen controlled the early going firing three of the game's first four shots towards the Statesmen goal. Salvador Lopez, the league's leading scorer, had the first scoring opportunity of the game. His shot in the 17th minute from 18-yards out, was blocked by a Hobart defender. In the 35th minute, Lopez had a free kick from the right wing stuffed by the Hobart wall.
The Statesmen took control of the game in the second half, outshooting the Dutchmen 9-3 in the final 45 minutes. Hobart nearly broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when senior
Derrick Acheampong broke down the left wing and into the box. His shot beat Trevor Krupp but ricocheted off the right post and out for a goal kick. Sophomore
Pete Critchlow had a scoring opportunity in the 76th minute that Krupp stopped with his right foot.
Senior
Alec Kaminer made two saves as he recorded his sixth shutout of the season. At the opposite end of the pitch, Krupp made seven saves for Union.
Hobart will be back on Cozzens Field tomorrow for another Liberty League match against Rensselear. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, Hobart will dedicate two Adirondack chairs in memory of Ray Demuth, the program's first head coach, on his favorite spot on the hill at Cozzens Field. The dedication will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by Hobart's alumni game on St. Clair Field at 10:30 a.m.
