CANTON, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year
Anna Rider scored her first collegiate goal, but St. Lawrence University rallied for a 2-1 Liberty League field hockey victory this afternoon.
The host Saints (5-6, 2-2) had a 17-15 edge in shots and a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Herons (4-8, 1-3) struck first, cashing in on a penalty corner in the 10th minute. Following senior
Fallon Adair's insert, William Smith fire a series of three shots on SLU goalkeeper Sydney Giacin. She stopped the first two, but the third, by Adair, got past her only to be stopped short of the goal line by Lindsey Houseman. Rider was there to collect the ball off of Houseman's stick and fired it into the wide open cage.
St. Lawrence equalized on the final play of the first half, scoring on a penalty corner with no time remaining. The Saints took a hard shot from the right side of the striking circle that DeVito turned aside. The ball found its way to Alex Clark near the back post. She flicked it toward the middle of cage and Lucy Stillman poked it across the line for her ninth goal of the game.
SLU took the lead in the 51st minute when Maggie Green lifted a diving shot over a Heron defender.
William Smith had two notable chances to equalize. In the 58th minute, junior
Kelsey Pierce fired a shot past Giacin, but Melissa Grosshans recorded a defensive save to preserve the lead. About nine minutes later, the Herons were awarded a penalty stroke, but Giacin made a blocker save on the offering.
The Herons return to McCooey Field for their next match, hosting Skidmore (6-7, 1-3) on Sunday, Oct. 14. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
