Hobart routs Rochester for Centennial Cup

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College football team dominated the 111th contest against the University of Rochester, retaining the Centennial Cup by a score of 52-7 on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium. The Statesmen rushed for a season-high 280 yards, handing off to 10 different ball carriers on the day.

Junior Brian Haeffner and sophomore Alex Milliken shared game-high honors, running for 81 yards and a TD each. First-year Dante Kimbrough ran for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns. First-year quarterback David Krewson made his first start for the Statesmen, completing five passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Ray Conley was the only Statesman with more than one catch on the day. He finished with two receptions for a game-high 62 yards and a TD.

Hobart (4-2, 2-0) put 35 points on the board before Rochester (1-5, 0-2) picked up its second first down of the game. While the ground game was featured on 56 of the Statesmen's 72 plays today, their first two scores came through the air. Krewson tossed a 7-yard TD to senior tight end Matt Woods to cap the team's first possession and then hit Conley on a 54-yard strike with just over 5 minutes to go in the first quarter. Krewson's throw to Conely was impressive covering 50 of 54 yards in the air. Hobart carried a 21-0 lead into the second quarter following Milliken's 23-yard TD run in the final minute of the opening frame.

In the second quarter, Kimbrough and Haeffner found their way into the end zone on 1-yard dives to raise the Statesmen lead to 35-0. Rochester got its second first down of the day late in the second quarter, but the drive was halted by Cal Sullivan's second interception in as many games. Hobart cashed in on the turnover when Kimbrough broke free for a 9-yard TD run, sending the Statesmen into halftime with a 42-0 lead.

Hobart's defense limited the Yellowjackets to just 57 yards in the first half, including minus 12 yards on the ground. The negative rushing total was influenced by the Statesmen's three sacks of UR quarterback Matt Gallagher. The senior signal caller finished the day 10-of-19 for 78 yards. He was sacked four times and picked off once.

The Hobart defense forced Rochester to punt on its first seven possessions and nine of its first 11.

The Statesmen needed just three plays from scrimmage to add to their lead in the third quarter. Krewson completed a pass behind the line of scrimmage to first-year Shahkyle Matthews who got a couple of key blocks down field and used an unmatched burst of speed to score from 62 yards out.

Hobart's second possession of the second half ended with a 40-yard field goal by sophomore Kyle Hackett for a 52-0 lead. It was his 17th career field goal (on 17 attempts) and puts him two away from the career record set by Eric Ampuja '05.

The Statesmen set the table for Rochester's only score of the day. Lined up to punt from the Rochester 45, the snap sailed over the punters head and was recovered at the Hobart 16. Four plays later, Josh Brown completed a 10-yard TD pass to Justin Daul.

Hobart ended the day with 473 yards of offense while limiting Rochester to 126. The Statesmen converted 8-of-14 third downs and had an average starting field position of their own 41. The Yellowjackets contributed to Hobart's field position, averaging just 23.3 yards on 10 punts.

First-year linebacker Caden Cole had a game-high 11 tackles for Rochester. Junior linebacker David McCarthy paced Hobart with eight stops. Senior defensive end Al Smith recorded two of the Statesmen's five sacks.

Hobart will be back in action at noon on Saturday, Oct. 20, when the Statesmen visit Rensselaer (5-0, 1-0). Rochester will head to Ithaca next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
