Haeffner, Statesmen run past Saints

CANTON, N.Y.—Junior running back Brian Haeffner ran for a career-high 200 yards and three touchdowns as the Hobart College football team ended the season with a 42-31 win at St. Lawrence University. The Statesmen completed their 11th consecutive winning season with a 5-4 record.

Haeffner got a career-high 28 carries and averaged 7.1 yards per rush on the day. He also caught a pass for 8 yards, giving him a game-high 208 all-purpose yards. Haeffner scored on TD runs of 14 yards, 1 yard and 8 yards. It's the first time a Statesman has rushed for three TDs since the 2017 season finale at Rochester.

Sophomore cornerback Jared Leake set up Hobart's first scoring drive, intercepting St. Lawrence quarterback Tyler Grochot and returning it 15 yards to the Saints' 37. Six plays later, sophomore Alex Milliken ran into the end zone from 6 yards out.

SLU's next drive stalled out at the Hobart 37 when sophomore linebacker Reilly Pelow broke up Grochot's fourth-and-5 pass. The Statesmen put the ball in the hands of Haeffner six times on the eight-play scoring drive, including a 22-yard run to reach the red zone and a 14-yard carry to extend the lead to 14-0.

Early in the second quarter it was St. Lawrence's turn to take advantage of a turnover. First-year quarterback completed a pass to junior wide receiver Ray Conley for a 23-yard gain, but Theo Blaschinski jarred the ball lose and the Saints recovered. Grochot threw on all eight plays of the drive, connecting with Andrew Murphy for an 8-yard TD. The Saints opted to go for two, but failed twice (Hobart was called for a penalty on the first try).

Grochot tossed his second TD pass of the day with 5:22 left in the opening half, this time finding Anthony Ferraro for 14-yards and six points. Again SLU tried for two and failed, leaving Hobart a 14-12 lead.

Hobart responded a touchdown drive of its own. This time first-year quarterback David Krewson led the way, running for 17 yards and passing for 56. He hit Conley for the drive's big play, a 36-yard gain on third-and-16. Krewson found sophomore tight end Jimmy Adams on an 11-yard throw for the TD. Sophomore Kyle Hackett's PAT made it 21-12 with 1:30 to go to halftime.

Krewson was 15-of-23 passing for 196 yards. Conley caught four passes for a team-high 89 yards.

The Saints (2-8, 1-4) executed the two-minute drill to perfection scoring their third touchdown of the second quarter with just five seconds remaining. Grochot to Sean McCormack for nine yards capped off the six-play, 62-yard march. Again SLU went for two and came away with nothing, sending Hobart into the locker room with a 21-18 lead.

The third quarter belonged to Hobart. Once again, the defense set up the first score when Pelow forced a fumble that Leake recovered near midfield. Six plays later, Krewson tossed his second TD of the day, a 5-yarder to junior tight end AJ Perlino.

The defense forced the Saints to go three-and-out on their next drive and the Hobart offense answered with a methodical, 12-play march that ended with Haeffner diving into the end zone from a yard away. The Statesmen carried a 35-18 lead into the final frame.

SLU cut its deficit to 10 early in the fourth quarter when Grochot found Murphy for a 45-yard TD. Austin Pinard was sent on to kick the PAT, ending the Saints futile attempts. The Saints threatened to make it a one-score game, moving to the Hobart 23, but first-year free safety Jay McCoy intercepted Grochot in the end zone.

Hobart struck back with an eight-play, 80-yard drive that stayed exclusively on the ground. Krewson had the big gain, breaking free for 27 yards on third down and five from just across midfield. Haeffner finished if off with back-to-back runs that picked up 9 and 8 yards. Hackett booted his sixth PAT of the day to give Hobart a 42-25 lead.

Hackett ended the season 37-for-37 on PATs and 9-for-9 on field goals. Dating back to last season, he's made a Hobart record 48 consecutive PATs. Hackett is a perfect 19-for-19 on field goals for his career and is tied for the Hobart record for field goals made.

St. Lawrence tacked on a touchdown inside the final minute (and failed on another two-point try), accounting for the final score.

Pelow led the Hobart defense with a career-high eight tackles.

Grochot completed 32 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns, but was intercepted twice. Travis Marnell caught a game-high 10 passes for 124 yards. Murphy pulled in seven passes for 125 yards and two TDs. Tyler Burns, Liam Murray and Caleb Null each finished with 11 tackles to pace the Saints.
