Hobart falls to St. Lawrence in double overtime

CANTON, N.Y.-Stephen Dorney scored 5:26 into the second overtime to lift St. Lawrence to a 3-2 victory over Hobart in a Liberty League semifinal match on MacAllaster Field this afternoon. The Statesmen finish their 2018 season with an 8-8-2 overall record.
 
Following a free kick, the Saints (12-2-2) earned a corner kick in the 106th minute. Jethro Dede sent the ball into the box. Dorney found himself on the end of the centering pass and redirected it across the goal line. It was his second goal of the season.
 
Hobart gained a territorial advantage in the opening half, firing four of the game's first five shots towards the goal. Mike Smith was up to the task for St. Lawrence, making four saves. The Statesmen broke through in the 20th minute when sophomore Pete Critchlow collected his third goal of the season. He tipped a Kyle Patrick centering pass inside the left goal post.
 
The Saints tied the game 1-1 just before half time. Brendan McNamee scored off a set play on a free kick. The goal was McNamee's sixth of the season.
 
St. Lawrence took a 2-1 lead just over six minutes into the second half when Charlton Kelly fired home a loose ball for his eighth goal of the season. Aidan Callahan was credited with the assist on the goal.
 
Patrick scored the equalizer for Hobart in the 68th minute. He one-timed a Jack Fell crossing pass past Smith and into the goal. In the 85th minute St. Lawrence was awarded a Red Card and played the final five minutes of regulation and both overtimes down a player. August Martini and Tristan Cornell Roberts had scoring chances late in regulation but both shots were stopped by Smith.
 
The majority of the first extra session was played in the midfield with neither team recording a shot.  Hobart's best opportunity to win the game came in the 105th minute when Trevor Poisson fired a shot wide.
 
Kaminer made three saves in just over 105 minutes in goal for Hobart while Mike Smith made six saves at the opposite end of the pitch.
 
The Statesmen finished the game with a 16-15 edge in shots on goal. Hobart also earned a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Today was the final game for Hobart seniors Ben Orr, Alec Kaminer, Mouhamed Diouf, Derrick Acheampong, Sam Farman, Mitch Palmer, Trevor Poisson, Tanner Poisson and Alex Weisbein. The nine members of the Class of 2019 finished their four-year careers with an overall record of 41-21-12.  They won two Liberty League regular season titles, one Liberty League tournament title, and advanced to the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
